The International Labour Organization (ILO) would be informed about the Hambantota Port issue, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media at the public awareness campaign launched by “Viyath Maga” Organisation in Battaramulla, the former President said it was the first time that the Navy had been used to disperse a protest.<\/p>\n

Former President Rajapaksa asked who had sent Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne to the Hambantota Port.<\/p>\n

Usually, armed forces could not be moved without an order by someone at the highest level, specially the commander, he said adding that the Navy Commander had been good officer during the war time. But it was not clear whether there was a hidden hand to tarnish the name of the war heroes through such incidents, Rajapaksa added.<\/p>\n

The government was planning to hand over the Hambantota Port to a foreign power and then they could do the same with the Trincomalee port and Kankasanthurai port. After selling all those ports around the country there was no need for a Ports Authority, Rajapaksa said.<\/p>\n

“However, I have already assured the protesters that I will re-recruit them to the Ports Authority. I will be able to do so only if we have the power,” he said.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the government\u2019s plan to hold a referendum on the new constitution to be drafted, Rajapaksa stressed that it should be passed by Parliament first.<\/p>\n

Rajapaksa hinted that there was a fund amounting to Rs. 1.5 billion offered by the US for parliamentary affairs and asked the journalists to conduct an investigation into it.<\/p>\n

He said the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID), were operating under political directions and they were being used to target the political enemies of the government.<\/p>\n

The former President stressed that there was a political instability and the country was headed for a police state. The government while talking about democracy and corruption was engaged corrupt activities and delaying holding elections, he added.
