The Navy Commander assaulted a journalist at an agitation in Hambantota Magampura harbour since the latter had broken through a perimeter defence line set up by the Naval ratings, Director General of Department of Government Information Ranga Kalansuriya said yesterday.<\/p>\n

Dr Kalansuriya said the journalist had breached basic ethical conduct. “A journalist who is covering a conflict situation involving security forces should keep in mind the location. It is not only for the maintenance of ethics but also for the security of the journalist.<\/p>\n

A person cannot report matters connected to the security forces just because he possesses a media accreditation card and a camera. The journalists should take necessary precautions and measures needed for his security otherwise he would face repercussions ranging from being assaulted or getting killed.”<\/p>\n

\nHowever, the navy commander assaulting a provincial journalist could not be approved, Dr Kalansuriya said, adding that he condemned the high-handed action. “None has an authority to assault others and every one has a right not to be subjected to such harassment.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Kalansuriya asked the media organisations which raise their voice on behalf of the victim correspondent whether they had settled their payments due for the provincial correspondents and what actions they had taken to ensure their safety. “Had they made their payments on time and acted in a manner to ensure their safety, then there is nothing wrong in such organisations raising their voice. There are media organisations which do not pay their provincial journalists properly. In some cases provincial journalists may have to wait months to receive their pay cheques.”<\/p>\n

Kalansuriya said statements of four other journalists who covered the same event had been recorded for an investigation conducted by the Department of Government Information. Their statements proved that the journalist in question had breached the defence line and moved forward, Kalansuriya said adding that he received the preliminary report of the investigation yesterday (12).<\/p>\n
