{"id":50328,"date":"2016-12-13T21:19:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T02:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=50328"},"modified":"2016-12-13T21:19:01","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T02:19:01","slug":"mahinda-emphasises-importance-of-opposing-efforts-to-divide-country-on-ethnic-lines-through-referendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=50328","title":{"rendered":"Mahinda  Emphasises Importance of  Opposing  Efforts to Divide Country on Ethnic Lines Through Referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By<\/p>\n<p>Shamindra Ferdinando<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the ruling UNP-SLFP coalition has not yet unveiled its constitutional reform proposals though it is asking other political parties to express their views.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Rajapaksa has said the government should make public its position without further delay.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a gathering at Palatuwa, Matara, former President Rajapaksa said that 2017 would be a crucial year.<\/p>\n<p> Declaring that the political movement led by him could win any election, former President emphasised the importance of opposing efforts to divide the country on ethnic lines through a referendum.<\/p>\n<p>A large number of former local government members and Joint Opposition supporters attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Strongly condemning the government for unleashing the navy on striking workers of the Hambantota port on Sunday, the former President said that he didn\u2019t oppose investments though under no circumstances sale of state assets could be endorsed.<\/p>\n<p>The former President urged the government to solve problems through negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Those who had got together to defeat the previous administration lacked a proper plan to develop the country, the former President said, asserting that ports and airports must not be handed over to foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>Former External Affairs Minister and Chairman of the newly formed Sri\u2008Lanka People\u2019s Front (SLPF) Prof. G.L. Peiris said the SLFP had become an appendage of the UNP, creating a huge political void in the country. The SLFP was playing second fiddle to the UNP while SLFPers and UPFA members were being persecuted, he alleged.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Peiris said it was absurd that a group of UNP members were asking some SLFPers in the government to quit.
