It is now clear that former CB Governor Arjuna Mahendran and his son in law Arjun Aloysius are seen as a convenient sacrifice for the government to save itself – not just by the SLFP group in the government but even by the UNP itself. <\/p>\n

Witness State Minister Ajith P.Perera\u2019s claim that it was they (the UNP) that actually recommended that criminal proceedings be started against Arjun Aloysius, but that the others meaning the SLFP, JVP and the Joint Opposition had diluted the report and not allowed it to happen! <\/p>\n

In parliament even Ranil Wickremesinghe was claiming that he has requested that the report be sent to the Attorney General for further action. Now even the President was shown saying at a meeting in Maharagama that it will be the courts that will have to decide on the propriety or otherwise of what happened at the Central Bank.<\/p>\n

Though the UNP at first tried to shield Mahendran, later they too seem to have got into the general stride of things and ended up differently. Of course they seem to be baying more for Aloysius\u2019s blood than for Mahendran\u2019s but the two are inextricably interlinked.<\/p>\n

Witness the following three points in the UNP\u2019s footnotes to the COPE report: These have done irreparable harm to the Mahendran-Aloysius duo.<\/p>\n

*<\/strong>That it should be probed whether Perpetual Treasuries had made huge profits by selling the bonds they bought on the secondary market to institutions like the EPF and why the EPF which could bid on the primary market bought bonds on the secondary market for higher interest rates.<\/p>\n

*<\/strong> That on 25 February 2015 – the day that the Central Bank advertised calling for bids for Rs one billion worth of 30 year bonds at the rate of 12.50% the interest rate for 30 year bonds was 10.14% and that this should be investigated.<\/p>\n

* <\/strong> Perpetual Treasuries did not have money to pay for the Rs. 29 billion worth of bonds they bought on 29 March 2016 and they had obtained a low-interest loan from the Central Bank itself to buy these bonds and thereby made an undue profit. <\/p>\n

In fact last week, minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene building upon the first of the UNP footnotes mentioned above, said at a press conference that of the bonds sold to the EPF by primary dealers during this period, 70% had been sold by Perpetual Treasuries. Both the UNP and SLFP have now resolved to sacrifice Arjuna Mahendran to save themselves, and having done so, they have now once again closed ranks behind Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The SLFP group seems to be oblivious to the fact that when they help label one of the PM\u2019s closest personal appointees as a crook and then unite behind the PM they are actually uniting behind a damaged PM.<\/p>\n

The government co-spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne said that if the Joint Opposition brings a no confidence motion against the Prime Minister, that will boomerang on them by which he meant that it will unite the SLFP group in parliament behind the UNP prime minister. But that is precisely what the Joint Opposition wants to do \u2013 to show the public that the UNP and the SLFP group in parliament are one and the same not two entities and that the only real anti-government, anti-UNP force is the Joint Opposition.
