Sri Lanka\u2019s legendary classical music singer and composer W.D. Amaradeva died on Thursday of a heart attack in Colombo. He was 88.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amaradeva died shortly after being admitted to the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, a spokesman for the facility said.<\/p>\n

Born Wannakuwatta Waduge Don Albert Perera, he later changed his name to Amaradeva and in 1972 composed the melody for the Maldivian national anthem, Qaumii Salaam, or national salute.<\/p>\n

He has been recognised for his contribution to music by the Governments of India, France and Sri Lanka as well as by several international organisations.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is currently visiting Hong Kong, said he was deeply saddened by Amaradeva\u2019s death and described him as a \u201csymbol of Sri Lankan classical music\u201d for decades.<\/p>\n

President Maithripala Sirisena also expressed condolences on Twitter saying: \u201cMaestro Amaradeva, it has been an honour to have (had) you in our lives. May you attain Nibbana (nirvana).\u201d<\/p>\n

A family member said the musician had wanted a low-key funeral, but a Government spokesman said they were discussing according him State honours. He is survived by his wife and three children. <\/p>\n
