{"id":48888,"date":"2016-10-11T01:24:50","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T05:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=48888"},"modified":"2016-10-11T01:24:50","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T05:24:50","slug":"sri-lanka-did-not-pull-out-of-or-boycott-saarc-summit-because-there-was-no-summit-to-attend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=48888","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka Did not Pull Out of or Boycott SAARC Summit Because There was no Summit to Attend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By<\/p>\n<p>Meera Srinivasan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka did not pull out of the SAARC summit, the country only expressed regret that the prevailing environment in the region was not conducive to hold the event, Sri Lanka\u2019s Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera told the parliament on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>His response comes in the wake of media reports interpreting Sri Lanka\u2019s statement as a decision to \u201cpull out\u201d of the summit or \u201cboycott it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Observing that the General Provisions of the Charter of the SAARC prescribes that \u201cdecisions at all levels shall be taken on the basis of unanimity,\u201d the Minister said: \u201cThe moment one country says that they are unable to attend a SAARC Summit, a Summit cannot be held. There was, therefore, no question of Sri Lanka pulling out of SAARC, or Sri Lanka saying that we will not attend the Summit as there was no Summit to attend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Sri Lanka issued a statement after several countries informed Nepal \u2014 the current SAARC chair \u2014 of their decision to withdraw participation from the summit that was scheduled to be held in November, in Islamabad.
