Some parliamentarians of the Joint Opposition (JO) had announced that a new party would be formed at the Saturday\u2019s rally in Ratnapura, but its leaders including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa clearly stated it would only be a political rally and such a thing would not happen there, the SLFP said yesterday.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media at the party head office in Darley Road, SLFP senior Vice President and Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations W. D. J. Seneviratne said his niece, Ratnapura District MP and JO activist Pavithra Wanniarachchi\u2019s claim that a new party would be formed at the Ratnapura rally had bee contradicted by the statements issued by JO leaders including the former President Rajapaksa and former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.<\/p>\n

“Real SLFPers will not like to divide the party,” he said, claiming that people of the Ratnapura District were also with the party.<\/p>\n

He said Wanniarachchi had claimed that the government had prevented them from using the Sivali grounds in Ratnapura for the JO rally.<\/p>\n

According to her, the Ratnapura Municipal Council permitted only the old lorry park in the Ratnapura town for them to hold the rally, he said, adding that it was a false claim made to obtain political mileage.<\/p>\n

“According to the request letter sent by a former municipal council member, they have requested the old lorry park for a promotion campaign on Oct. 07 and 08 and they also asked permission to use loud speakers,” Seneviratne said showing a copy of the request letter.<\/p>\n

“They however later wanted to hold the rally on Sivali ground and the Municipal Council allowed the latter request too,”\u2008 the Minister said.<\/p>\n

The Ratnapura District SLFP leader said they had joined the national unity government to protect the party members and do some work which they had not been able to do under the previous government even when they had a two-thirds majority.<\/p>\n

“Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa won the war against the LTTE\u2008and now we have to win the economic war under President Maithripala Sirisena,” Seneviratne said.<\/p>\n

State Minister of Highways Dilan Perera alleged that former minister Basil Rajapaksa had promised Pavithra Wanniarachchi the post of the General Secretary of the new party. Therefore and the latter was spreading false statements which were denied by the JO leaders.<\/p>\n

“Former President Rajapaksa, former ministers Dullas Alahapperuma, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Kumara Welgama have denied that a new party will be formed in Ratnapura,” he said.<\/p>\n
