Even a Sri Lankan Tamil film genre was active in the peninsula at the time.<\/p>\n<p>This golden era saw cultural events of the South being taken to Jaffna and vice versa. Dr Victor Ratnayake still recalls how his one-man concert SA was staged in the Veerasingham hall in Jaffna amidst heavy cheering and greetings by the compassionate Tamil populous. That was the good old days. The rest is history.<\/p>\n<p>Revival process of the Northern peninsula after a 30 year conflict has encompassed diverse areas of vast importance and cinema is no exception.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Majority of cinemagoers in the peninsula  currently attracted to commercial cinema of South India.<\/p>\n<p>Budding filmmakers In the North who strive to enter the world of cinema adapt new technology without proper know-how or exposure to world cinema. Thus there is a dire need to train and educate them on world cinema and its newest trends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaffna International Cinema Festival (JAFFNAICF) 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a view to shedding light once again on Sri Lankan Tamil cinema, Jaffna International Cinema Festival (JAFFNAICF) was launched in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Second edition of this festival, JAFFNAICF 2016 is to be held from September 23 \u2013 27 in Jaffna. It is presented by Agenda 14 in collaboration with the Fine Arts Department of the University of Jaffna and Ceylon Theaters.<\/p>\n<p>JAFFNAICF 2016 is positioned as a non-partisan platform to explore contemporary forms of creative expression in cinema.<\/p>\n<p>The main intention of JAFFNAICF 2016 is to celebrate independent cinema in the peninsula. Using art to reach out to people, this festival would create a space for communities across borders to interact with each other through cinema.<\/p>\n<p>JAFFNAICF 2016 Director, Anomaa Rajakaruna said at a press conference to announce the event, in the South of the island itself, in the Indian Ocean region or in international film circuits far away Sri Lanka is known only for its Sinhala language cinema. Yet there was and is a Sri Lankan Tamil Cinema.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cAt a time when the country is divided by the language we speak, the faith we believe in and the political ideologies we depend on, cinema could become a powerful medium of expression in the journey towards peace and reconciliation. It could create a dialogue across borders and communities. Unfortunately cinema is not used in this manner in Sri Lanka today\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JAFFNAICF 2016 Schedule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opening film of JAFFNAICF 2016 will be Ken Loach\u2019s I Daniel Blake which won the Cannes film festival Palme d\u2019Or award this year. Screening at JAFFNAICF 2016 will be the Asian premier of this film.<\/p>\n<p>The closing film of this year\u2019s festival will be an international award winning film from Chennai, Visaranai by Vetri Maaran.<\/p>\n<p>Six main categories of films are aligned to be screened at the festival. These categories include European Panorama, Official selection, Debut competition, invited films, Traveling films South Asia and Short films. Thus a gamut of local and foreign films will be screened at the fest to broaden horizons of moviegoers and filmmakers in the peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>JAFFNAICF 2016 will present three awards honoring seniors and encouraging young generation. This includes aLifetime Achievement Award, Best Debut Film Awardand Best Short Film Award and Audience Award for the popular short film.<\/p>\n<p>International critics in JAFFNAICF 2016 JuriesareAlice Shih (Canada), Axel Estein (Germany), Gayatri Chatterjee (India) and Juan Carlos Lemus Polan\u00eda (Colombia)<\/p>\n<p>Three Master-classes at JAFFNAICF will be conducted to provide technological know-how to young short-filmmakers in the peninsula.
