Veteran Tamil journalist K.G. Mahadeva, who served as the Senior News Editor of the Eelanadu, in Jaffna, passed away, at the age of 76, in Chennai on Sunday (11).<\/p>\n

Mahadeva, who hailed from Batticaloa, served in the Seithi (News) publication from the upcountry in the sixties before joining Eelanadu, Jaffna, which was one of the leading regional news dailies founded by late Valachchenai Paper Mills Chairman K.C. Thangaraja in 1958.<\/p>\n

Mahadeva played a key role as a News Editor at Eelanadu, Jaffna which was set on fire by hooligans, on the same night the Jaffna Public Library was set ablaze, for its unbiased contribution in 1981.<\/p>\n

Within a couple of days after the destruction of Eelanadu, Mahadeva and his colleagues, along with a young team of journalists, brought out the Eelanadu to the appreciation of its readership in the North and East.<\/p>\n

Mahadeva, with his vast experience in journalism contributed his part as a promising News Editor and won the praise of several local and foreign journalists, when the situation in Jaffna changed with the separatist war taking centre stage.<\/p>\n

Mahadeva, who was known as ‘Mahan’ in media circles, was a pleasant gentleman who always accommodated all walks of people in an amicable manner and he was popular with all leading political figures and those who held key positions in various fields.<\/p>\n

Mahadeva encouraged several young journalists at Eelanadu and gave them the right direction by teaching them the finer aspects of newspaper journalism.<\/p>\n

His daily gossip column in Eelanadu, titled Ippadiyum Nadakirathu ( It happens this way as well) was very popular among the readers in Jaffna.<\/p>\n

In his later days, he was living in Trichirapalli, in Tamil Nadu and contributed immensely to Tamil publications in India and other countries too.<\/p>\n

He has also written several books, including his autobiography, sharing his experience in Tamil journalism.<\/p>\n

His funeral will take place in Trichirapalli (Trichy)in Tamil Nadu today.<\/p>\n
