They were all found guilty of murdering former MP and Presidential Adviser Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra and three others.<br \/>\nThe three-member Trial-at-Bar Bench was divided in its verdict with two members finding the defendants guilty and the Chairman saying they should be acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>Those convicted and sentenced to death were, former Police constable Anura Thushara de Mel, Chaminda Jayanath alias Dematagoda Chaminda, Sarath Bandara, Priyantha Janaka Bandara Galagoda (who is absconding) and former MP<br \/>\nR. Duminda Silva.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Justice Padmini Gunathilaka, announcing her verdict said the five suspects have been proved to be guilty of the said crime and Justice M.C.B. Moraes also announced that he agreed with his colleague&#8217;s verdict.<br \/>\nHowever, the Chairman of the three-member Bench Justice Shiran Guneratne stated that as the charges filed against the 13 suspects, in the case, by the Attorney General (AG) have not been proved beyond reasonable doubt, his verdict would be to acquit them from the charges against them.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the two other High Court Judges did not agree with the verdict given by the Chairman of the Bench, the accused, former MP R. Duminda Silva and four others were sentenced to death.<br \/>\nHowever, the Bench decided to free eight other suspects from all charges against them.<br \/>\nThose acquitted were Chandana Kumara, Lanka Rasanjana, Malaka Sameera, V. Amila, Suranga Premalal, Chaminda Abeywickrema, Rohana Marasinghe and N. Shaminda.<\/p>\n<p>The AG had indicted 13 persons on 17 counts over the killing of former MP Bharatha Premachandra and three others, following an exchange of gunfire at Walpola, Mulleriyawa on the day of the local government election held on 8 October 2011.<br \/>\nFollowing a lengthy Court process, the three-member Trial-at-Bar Bench issued their verdict last morning.
