It was so unfortunate that the LTTE activists assaulted our High Commissioner Sahib Ansar at the Kuala Lumpur Airport. He received injuries. This is an insult against the Lankan government. The government should take into account seriously how the LTTE activists staged protests displaying LTTE flags to prevent former President Rajapaksa attending and addressing the conference and issuing threats against him. Why the government is silent on LTTE activists assaulting a Lankan bhikkhu inside a temple there. We demand to know the action taken by the government in the face of these brutal acts which strain the good relations we have with Malaysia. It is a serious situation. Why doesn’t the government take the security of former President seriously? We do not blame the Malaysian government. What would be the response of Sri Lankan government?

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe: I condemn the attack on Lankan High Commissioner on Sept. 04. I have instructed the Foreign Ministry to summon Malaysian High Commissioner in Colombo and inform our displeasure immediately. It is the duty of the Foreign Ministry to provide for facilities for the MPs, former Prime Ministers and former Presidents when they go abroad.

We have provided everything for the former President. We have given him vehicles. We can take our policemen there but we cannot carry firearms. Providing security is a task assigned to the security forces of the host country. We provide necessary security for former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Kumaratunga when they travel abroad. The High Commissioner had been informed to provide full security for the participants from Sri Lanka. That incident occurred when the High Commissioner went to the airport with Daya Gamage, Anoma Gamage and Dinesh Gunawardena. Former President Rajapaksa was not there then. Anoma Gamage and Daya Gamage represented the UNP. Mahinda Rajapaksa represented the SLFP and Dinesh Gunawardena the MEP. Mahinda Rajapaksa gave priority to attending the ICAPP over participation at the SLFP convention in Kurunegala. He was the former Chairman of the ICAPP. Incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena did not oppose former president attending the ICAPP.

It has been found that the attackers were from the Malaysian branch of the ‘We Tamils’ Naam Thamilar of Tamil Nadu. They live in Malaysia and have Indian citizenship. They are not Sri Lankans. We are taking action against the LTTEers in Malaysia. Malaysian LTTEers have connections with KP, with whom you have had deals. This group has links to the main opposition of Malaysia. We are ready to send a delegation to discuss with this group. We protect Mahinda Rajapaksa. This country needs him. He should continue to do politics here. I have no problem with that.

Sri Lankans would never go to a temple and attack a monk. Divaina paper says that the attackers were LTTTE. It may because of the Divaina knows everything of the LTTE. The Divaina paper should share its knowledge with the Malaysian police.

President Maithripala Sirisena and government do everything to prevent these incidents.

Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake: This is an attack against our nation. Therefore, Parliament should condemn this act. Every country is bound to give protection to Sri Lankan diplomats. But, the Malaysian government has failed in its duty. They should have taken the security of our delegation more seriously. We should not link these attackers to the people in North. People in the North do not follow the methods of extremists elsewhere. The voice of these extremists is not the voice of people of the North. We should condemn the extremists and should defeat them through diplomatic means.

Opposition Leader R Sampanthan: I, too, condemn this dastardly act. We should demand stern action against those responsible. Our country is in the path of reconciliation. We should not let these incidents harm the process of reconciliation.

Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella: Lankan diplomat Chris Nonis was assaulted in London. What did your government do then?

MP Dinesh Gunawardena: I raised an important question seeking response from the Prime Minister. The problem between Sajin Vass and Nonis occurred at a dinner after consuming various things. You cannot compare it with this incident.

MP Anoma Gamage: A contingent of around 100 men had been provided to the security of former President.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe: The government is dedicated to providing security to the former President. We cannot send troops abroad with weapons. Malaysian President is a close friend of the former President Rajapaksa.

Courtesy:The Island

By Saman Indrajith Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday that the government had called for a detailed report from the Malaysian government on the attack on Sri Lankan envoy at the Kuala Lumpur Airport.
