President Maithripala Sirisena has told UNSG Ban Ki-moon that a section of influential Tamil politicians severely have undermined the post-war national reconciliation process by demanding immediate solutions to long-standing problems.<\/p>\n

President Sirisena stressed that his administration expected to be allowed to address issues without encountering undue pressure.<\/p>\n

The President who is also the leader of the SLFP was addressing the media at the President\u2019s House yesterday to explain his stand on post-war reconciliation process, a countrywide poverty alleviation project and the ongoing efforts to stabilize the SLFP in the wake of the SLFP-led Joint Opposition challenging his authority.<\/p>\n

The President said that he had one-on-one with UNSG Ban Ki-moon following about one-hour discussion between GoSL and UN delegations on Thursday. Emphasizing that the one-on-one shouldn\u2019t be construed as secret meeting, President Sirisena said he cautioned the outgoing UN Chief regarding extremist political elements in the north as he was scheduled to visit Jaffna on Friday (Sept. 2).<\/p>\n

President Sirisena has told Moon that his administration had restored democracy and taken tangible measures to transform key sectors, including the judiciary since January 2015 presidential polls. The President has stressed that it was unfair on the part of some northern politicians to put pressure on the administration.<\/p>\n

President Sirisena has asserted that aggressive actions could certainly harm the ongoing post-war national reconciliation efforts. Extremists on both sides undermined national reconciliation and a section of the media, too, influenced sentiments seriously inimical to peaceful co-existence among the communities.<\/p>\n

Responding to a query by the media, President Sirisena said that he had an opportunity to warn the UNSG regarding those who would criticise the government during his visit to Jaffna. The President stressed that deadlines to implement various Geneva proposals weren\u2019t acceptable. The President said that he had told Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and major countries that his administration shouldn\u2019t be given deadlines under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he had discussed matters relating to Geneva Resolution 30\/1 during one-on-one, President Sirisena said: “The UNSG didn\u2019t bring it up. I too did not talk about it.”<\/p>\n

Commenting on protests in some parts of the Northern Province, particularly in Mulativu on Thursday, a smiling President Sirisena said that he expected a far worse situation ahead of UNSG\u2019s visit. Calling Thursday\u2019s protests minor, the President said that he understood the problems experienced by those who had been displaced due to the conflict.<\/p>\n

The President said that some displaced demanded their original land whereas others wanted suitable plot of land in the Northern Province. Unfortunately, the displaced and various other interested parties routinely opposed government efforts to survey land to facilitate resettlement of the displaced.<\/p>\n

An irate President alleged that some interested parties had told the displaced not to accept land given by the government. The President claimed that a despicable attempt was being made to deceive the international community. Alleging that some had been bent on sabotaging government efforts, President Sirisena said that some people obviously felt that it was advantageous for them if northern problems remained unresolved.<\/p>\n

President Sirisena vowed that whatever the difficulties, the government would address the contentious issue of northern settlement within the next couple of months.<\/p>\n

President Sirisena promised to inquire into claims that live firing exercises conducted by the Army in Mannar had caused immense hardships to pregnant women and some couldn\u2019t conceive due to the same reason.<\/p>\n

The President dismissed assertion that his position as regards Sri Lanka\u2019s response to Geneva Resolution 30\/1 and that of Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera was contradictory. The President pointed that the Foreign Minister had been present when GoSL and UN delegations met on Thursday and there hadn\u2019t been any disagreement between them.<\/p>\n

The President acknowledged that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran had taken contradictory stands on the national issue. While asserting the need to understand ground realities, the President expressed the belief that the differences could be ironed out as they made progress on post-war national reconciliation efforts.<\/p>\n
