The Joint Opposition (JO) alleged yesterday in Parliament that the Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) had become a danger to not only the state sector employees, but those in the private sector.<\/p>\n

JO member Bandula Gunawardena raising the issue of the FCID proving public officials said that state sector employees were submitting their resignations in fear of being investigated and questioned by the FCID and called on the government to reinstate such individuals.<\/p>\n

“Nobody will be able to get anything done from the Public sector if state employees continue to resign out of fear of being investigated. We urge the government to reinstate them.”<\/p>\n

MEP Leader Dinesh Gunwardena, joining in the cross talk, noted that the pursuing of private sector workers by the FCID for investigations was a draconian practice and one private sector individual who was providing services to the government on a voluntary basis had already been questioned by the FCID.<\/p>\n

Responding the allegations, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe asserted that investigation would be conducted if any individual was suspected of having broken the law.<\/p>\n

“What have these state sector workers done? They are responsible for the distribution of public funds among the people during the Uva provincial Council election,” the Premier said.<\/p>\n

He said those who had already resigned could not be reinstated. “These public servants have resigned on their own accord; we cannot simply drag them back and reinstate them.”<\/p>\n

Commenting on the assertion made by MP Dinesh Gunawardena, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the particular private sector individual referred to by the Opposition MP was a friend of his as well.<\/p>\n

“He is a friend of mine as well but he was investigated following a court directive. The decision to investigate him was taken by the Judiciary and not the government,” the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n
