A tense situation erupted during the campaign of \u2018Different yet Equal\u2019 close to Baudhaloka Mawatha yesterday.<\/p>\n

A group of monks representing the \u201cSingha Le Jathika Balamuluwa\u201d disrupted the unity campaign claiming that the campaigners cannot use the term \u201cSingha Le\u201d during their demonstration. The \u2018Different yet Equal\u2019 refuted it saying that \u201cSingha Le, Ekama Le\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe motive of the \u2018Singha Le\u2019 organisation was to create a tense situation and to spread their racist ideology, Azad Sally said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe organised a silent and peaceful demonstration to show that all people should be treated equally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, monks representing the \u201cSingha Le Jathika Balamuluwa\u201d said the demonstration was organised to encourage racism.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a threat to national security,\u201d they alleged.<\/p>\n

Differences are natural and divisions are socially constructed, said one of \u2018Different yet Equal\u2019 participants Subha Wijesiriwardene adding that they do not represent any organisation.<\/p>\n

They are a collective of citizens from different backgrounds gathered for a common cause.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have voluntarily gathered here as group of friends and as citizens of Sri Lanka to stand for our right and to remind the public about our responsibility as citizens to create a peaceful society in which our different ethnic, cultural, and religious identities are valued equally,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sally said the government should take immediate action against the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge citizens to stand up against racism. We all have a collective responsibility. We are against racism and all kinds of discrimination.<\/p>\n

We want a just, democratic and equal Sri Lanka. We will keep taking that message as citizens to people as much as we can,\u201d<\/p>\n

Wijesiriwardene said.<\/p>\n

The demonstrators of \u2018Different yet Equal\u2019 also claimed that the Police failed to do their duty. They were biased towards \u201cSingha Le\u201d protestors.<\/p>\n

\u201cCounter protesters were holding a distorted flag. Police made no move to arrest them,\u201d the demonstrators said. <\/p>\n
