Mawanella Magistrate L.K. Mahinda yesterday ordered the Joint Opposition (JO), which is set to start its march from Kandy to Colombo today, to use alternative routes circumventing the Mawanella town and its city limits.<\/p>\n

The JO is set to kick off its much touted four-day protest march from Kandy to Colombo this morning and its first stop was to be at Mawanella town.<\/p>\n

However, the UNP under PM Ranil Wickremasinghe has decided to carry out a UNP membership drive today and tomorrow in the Mawanella electorate. Mawanella Police making submissions to the Mawanella Magistrate stated that since both groups are likely to confront each other at Mawanella, it could lead to a clash that could escalate in public disorder and requested Court to ban the march organized by the JO.
\nThe Mawanella Magistrate ordered the JO to bypass the Mawanella town and its city limits and use alternative routes for its march and refrain from using the town as its first stop.<\/p>\n

The Mawanella Magistrate also ordered Police to provide sufficient security at both events.
\nChief Minister of the Southern Province Shan Wijayalal de Silva said he was not sure whether the Pada Yathra would take place.<\/p>\n

“We saw the appointment of the Shadow Cabinet earlier this month. But the former President brushed aside his designated slot in that Cabinet and called for the scrapping of that Cabinet. That has led us to believe that this pada yathra will also not materialize. Maybe the former President will tell everyone to go home after five minutes into the walk from Kandy.”<\/p>\n

JO’s Pada Yathra has been organized for today under the slogan of ‘The Constitution is a Grave.’ <\/p>\n
