Cracks have already begun to appear in the Joint Opposition camp over the appointment of Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy as the new Governor of the Central Bank.<\/p>\n

Calling the new Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy a Tamil separatist, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP, Udaya Gammanpila questioned the wisdom of allowing such a person to handle the country’s economy. Coomaraswamy, who was appointed on Saturday (2) as the Central Bank Governor, has the capacity to hold the post, however he is lacking in integrity and loyalty to the country.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Ceylon Today yesterday (3) Gammanpila said, “Coomaraswamy had been a senior advisor to the Galleon Fund, which was managed by Raj Rajaratnam who is serving an 11-and-a-half year prison sentence on charges of insider trading. Raj Rajaratnam was an LTTE financier.”<\/p>\n

The common factor between Arjuna Mahendran, who was embroiled in controversy pertaining to treasury bonds and Coomaraswamy is that they are both close friends of Raj Rajaratnam who had LTTE connections, Gammanpila stressed.<\/p>\n

“Raj Rajaratnam sent 3M dollars to Finance minister Ravi Karunanayake which was also under investigation in the recent past. As both of them are close friends of LTTE financial network, this reflects that this government is heavily dependent on Tamil separatist forces. Therefore we will always keep a watchful eye on Indrajit Coomaraswamy. Whilst being in the Opposition we were able to build a force thereby compelling the government to send Arjuna Mahendran home. We would like to warn Coomaraswamy that if he goes against this nation by abusing the powers and privileges given to him by his esteemed office we will not hesitate to bring the fate of Arjuna Mahendran on him as well.”<\/p>\n

When asked whether Charitha Rattwatte would be a better candidate, he said,
\n“We don’t mind anybody taking that office as long as the candidate has the educational and intellectual capacity which is necessary to take up the role as the Central Bank Governor, and possesses loyalty towards this country.”<\/p>\n

Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) Wimal Weerawansa also expressed similar sentiments and noted that Coomaraswamy’s connection to Raj Rajaratnam does not bode well in favour of his position as the Governor of the Central Bank. He further noted that the priority should be to take action against Mahendran and not just appointing another in his stead.<\/p>\n

“Action must be taken against Mahendran for the massive dent he caused in the economy. This is apparent even in the COPE reports. The recent appointed Governor is currently working as a director for a main private company. He was also the secretary of the Galleon Fund, run by Raj Rajaratnam who was connected to the LTTE. Appointing Coomaraswamy as the Governor is similar to appointing LTTE diaspora leader Suren Surendran as the Governor,” Weerawansa said.<\/p>\n

On the other hand fellow member of the Joint Opposition and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Vidura Wickramanayake feels that the new Governor must be given a chance.
\n“We still don’t know his performance as the Governor, yet. We would like to give him a chance,” he said, when asked whether he feels positive about new appointment, he added, “I am positive with anything and everything, as long as he does not make any mistakes. We have to give him the benefit of the doubt.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Leader of the Joint Opposition and UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardene tweeted; “We welcome the appointment of a New CB Governor, an experienced professional and respected in his field. Hope he brings credibility to CBSL”.
