Stressing the need to reorganise the party to form a clean political movement, President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday invited everyone to join him to form an SLFP-led government in the future. He said the SLFP led UPFA had been defeated at two major elections last year, but would work for the future victories of the people.<\/p>\n

Addressing the SLFP May Day rally in Galle, the President said the foundation for a clean political movement necessary for forming an SLFP led government had laid in the South yesterday (01).<\/p>\n

There were 49 May Day rallies in the country yesterday, but the SLFP\u2019s was the biggest, the President said.<\/p>\n

“I have been informed by the Police that the highest number of people attended the Galle rally,” Sirisena said.<\/p>\n

The President emphasized that there were several challenges facing the country including debts.<\/p>\n

“We cannot achieve these challenges and develop the country without being united. We have to unite to take forward the country on the right path,” Sirisena said.<\/p>\n

“We could got the fish ban lifted by the EU and the gazette notification to re \u2013 start exporting fish to EU countries will be issued tonight,” Sirisena said, adding that the GSP Plus concession too would be restored within two weeks.<\/p>\n

The President said Sri Lanka had invited to the G7 summit for the first time in history due to the democratic political environment in the country under his leadership and he would leave for Japan to attend it at the end of this month.<\/p>\n

The President said his government had been able to restore democracy in the country by introducing the 19th amendment to the Constitution last year.<\/p>\n

“We have taken several steps to bring about reconciliation, but much more things remains to be done to that end,” he said.<\/p>\n

Sirisena said the call for federalism heard from the North was nothing new. It had been made in the 1950s and 60s. “We have to find out why there is a demand for federalism.”<\/p>\n

The President promised to consider the proposals including the cancellation of the increase in VAT presented by Chairman of the SLFP May Day Committee Lesley Devendra at the rally.<\/p>\n

Two May Day possessions started from Magalle and Mahamodara reached the Samanala Ground through the Galle \u2013 Matara and Galle \u2013 Colombo roads.<\/p>\n

President\u2019s eldest daughter Chathurika Sirisena led the Polonnaruwa District stretch of the May Day march. His son also took part in it.<\/p>\n

Former Presidents and SLFP Advisors Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa did not attend the rally.<\/p>\n

The rally was suspended for nearly one hour due to a down pour.<\/p>\n
