TORONTO – <\/strong>A Tamil film has been pulled by big-wig movie theatre corporation Cineplex following three GTA attacks involving a pepper spray-like substance.<\/p>\n

Theatres in Brampton, Scarborough and Mississauga were evacuated Friday night around 7:20 p.m. because of similar attacks during screening of the action movie Theri. A few people were treated by paramedics at the scene but no one was seriously injured.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can confirm that we did cancel the remaining run of the film, Theri, at our theatres across the GTA,\u201d Cineplex spokesman Sarah Van Lange said Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe safety and security of our guests and employees is our top priority, and while each incident was localized to a single auditorium, in an abundance of caution we evacuated each of the theatres entirely,\u201d she said. \u201cSteps were taken immediately that evening to ensure the situation was addressed. We continue to take precautionary measures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police in both Toronto and Peel Region aren\u2019t connecting the screening of the film with any of the attacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is still an ongoing investigation involving mischief and administering a noxious substance,\u201d Toronto Police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said. \u201cNo, there has been no connection made to any movie that was playing, at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The affected theatre locations were Scarborough Town Centre, Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, and Brampton\u2019s Trinity Common Mall.<\/p>\n

Peel Regional Police Const. Bally Saini also said investigators are not drawing a parallel between the film and the attacks and that the investigation continues.<\/p>\n

David Poopalapillai, spokesman for the Canadian Tamil Congress, described Theri as an \u201centertaining movie,\u201d but said he wouldn\u2019t consider its premise controversial.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s an isolated incident,\u201d Poopalapillai said. \u201cWhoever has done this, we want the police to go after these people. In India, there was some controversy about ticket prices where (Theri) was shown, but not over here.\u201d<\/p>\n
