Three GTA movie theatres were cleared out around the same time Friday night because of starkly similar attacks involving a pepper spray-like substance.<\/p>\n

Both Toronto Police and Peel Regional Police are aware of the similar theatre scares that happened around the same time in neighbouring jurisdictions and say investigators are looking into any possible connection.<\/p>\n

Whether the three attacks were coordinated by the perpetrators or the timing was only coincidental remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

Peel police say theatres at Square One Shopping Centre, in Mississauga, and the Trinity Common Mall, in Brampton, had to be evacuated around 7:20 p.m. after patrons fell ill.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received reports that a noxious substance had been released in the theatres,\u201d Const. Rachel Gibbs said Saturday.<\/p>\n

She said the substance caused \u201csimilar effects as pepper spray,\u201d which typically include burning and swelling of the eyes, throat and nose.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone was checked out by paramedics at the scene and released,\u201d Gibbs said.<\/p>\n

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from both theatres, which are about 20 km apart, and appealing for witnesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone saw anything suspicious, we\u2019re asking that they come forward,\u201d Gibbs said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Toronto cops are investigating a pepper spray-like incident that also happened at 7:20 p.m. at a theatre in the Scarborough Town Centre \u2014 more than 50 km east of the Peel Region theatres.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do know that in wasn\u2019t us,\u201d Const. Craig Brister said, explaining it was definitely not a cop who discharged the substance.<\/p>\n

He said investigators were not immediately able to determine if the noxious substance was released inside a theatre or out in the corridor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe theatre was re-opened less than an hour later once the air cleared,\u201d Brister said, adding police did not find any empty canisters.<\/p>\n
