The compromise reached by the Sri Lankan government and the Lankan construction industry on the controversial issue of building 65,000 houses for the war displaced in the Tamil-majority Northern Province, has left the affected Tamils with no choice but to live in Arcelor Mittal\u2019s flimsy, pre-fabricated PVC and steel houses, unsuited to the warm climate and culture of North Lanka.<\/p>\n

Sources in the Lankan builders\u2019 consortium, Major Constructors of Sri Lanka (MCSL), told Express that as per the compromise, Lakshmi Mittal\u2019s company, ArcelorMittal, will build 65,000 its type of houses in the North, as already planned, and the MCSL will build 65,000 brick and mortar houses elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the MCSL had sent a proposal to build brick and mortar houses in the North, given the unsuitability and high cost of the ArcelorMittal model, but ArcelorMittal used its high connections to swing the deal. Subsequent political protests led to a compromise.<\/p>\n

But the compromise means that the war displaced will have to live in box-like houses with no chimneys or verandahs. In contrast, elsewhere in the island, the MCSL houses will be built to suit local climatic and cultural conditions.<\/p>\n

When Northern Province Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran asked President Maithripala Sirisena if ArcelorMittal type houses are being built elsewhere in Lanka, the President said \u201cNo\u201d. <\/p>\n

The Tamil National Alliance MP from Jaffna, M.A.Sumanthiran, even showed parliament pictures of hinges coming off ArcelorMittal\u2019s \u201cmodel\u201d houses.<\/p>\n
