President Maithripala Sirisena handed over 60 acres held by the navy at Sampoor to original owners last August. The navy facility covered an area of 237 acres.<\/p>\n<p>Navy headquarters said the entire camp had been vacated to facilitate resettlement and rehabilitation of the war displaced.<\/p>\n<p>Having established the base in 2007, the navy commissioned it as SLNS Vidura during 2013. Troops brought Sampoor under government control in early September 2006.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The navy has established a slightly bigger camp closer to the abandoned base. A senior official told The Island that relocation of the base wouldn\u2019t in anyway affect the overall deployment in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan attended Friday\u2019s event. Among those present were Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, D.M. Swaminathan, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, Z.A.
