The JVP on Thursday vowed not to allow the government to implement the highly controversial Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) with the Indian government even if it was passed by Parliament. It said it would go all out to torpedo it.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media at the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR), JVP trade union wing leader said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in spite of his aggressive behaviour both inside and outside Parliament was not in a position to implement ETCA due to protests by the working class.<\/p>\n

He said ETCA was not a new thing, but the old CEPA in all but name. The Wickremesinghe government had in 2002 introduced the CEPA but it had now been brought back under a different name by the present UNP-led government.<\/p>\n

Lal Kantha said: “We tackled Mahinda Rajapaksa and therefore dealing with Ranil is child\u2019s play.”<\/p>\n

The JVP unionist said the then UNP government before 1994 had labelled all anti-government activists as JVPers and the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa government had called them Tigers.<\/p>\n

Likewise, present UNP government labelled anti-government activists as the henchmen of the Rajapaksa government, Lal Kantha said, adding that Wickremesinghe himself had paved the way for progressive parties to raise their voices against the government\u2019s bad acts within such a short period of five months.<\/p>\n

Lal Kantha said they condemned PM Wickremesinghe\u2019s comment on media and threats levelled against the Government Medical Officers\u2019 Association (GMOA) which was a powerful trade union in the country.<\/p>\n

“We consider the PM\u2019s threat to the GMOA as an attack on all trade unions in the country,” he said, adding that all professionals from ground level to highest ranks were against the ETCA.<\/p>\n

Former JVP MP and President of the Inter Company Employees Union Wasantha Samarasinghe said that there were more than 15,000 job vacancies in the Export Processing Zone in Katunayake, but youth refused to accept those jobs as the salaries were very low. It was not even enough to cover their boarding fees.<\/p>\n

General Secretary of the All Ceylon Medical Officers Association Dr Jayantha Bandara said already 80% of drugs were imported from India and it was to give them a stranglehold on the country\u2019s health sector that the government was rushing to operate an Indian emergency ambulance service in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
