Amidst objections by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa, the UNP Working Committee yesterday endorsed the appointment of Democratic Party Leader, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to Parliament via the National List.<\/p>\n

The vacancy arose as a result of the recent death of Lands Minister M. K. A. D. S. Gunawardena.<\/p>\n

Informed sources told The Island that Fonseka had been assured of being appointed an MP by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe subject to Working Committee approval, prior to the Democratic Party (DP) entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with the UNP led United National Front (UNF) last week to further the policies that the people had endorsed at last August\u2019s General Election.<\/p>\n

A proposal submitted to nominate Fonseka to Parliament had been endorsed by the decision making Working Committee yesterday, sources said.<\/p>\n

The Justice Minister said that it was wrong to appoint defeated candidates as MPs via the National List.<\/p>\n

However, Fonseka, who lost the last parliamentary election which he contested from the Colombo District, pointed out that there was nothing wrong in the procedure being adopted. “Some of the UPFA candidates lost at the last general election because the Mahinda Rajpaksa faction campaigned against them and sabotaged their chances. That was why President Maithripala Sirisena appointed them to Parliament on the National List. It was done to rectify an injustice caused by a section of their own alliance.”
