Former External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris yesterday warned that the government decision to amend the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was ill-advised.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media at the N. M. Perera Centre in Borella, he said that the government had buckled under pressure from the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) and the Tamil National Alliance.<\/p>\n

The government would amend the PTA as the first step towards repealing the Act, Prof. Peiris said, adding that the government was implementing an election pledge given to the TNA\u2008and other groups in return for votes at the last presidential election.<\/p>\n

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s government had rehabilitated about 12,000 LTTE cadres and released them, but the remaining 235 in custody could not be released simply as they were responsible for acts of terrorism, he said.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris said that it was not possible to rehabilitate the suspects and, therefore, the previous government had detained them.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris said that the PTA had been introduced to punish terrorists, but the present government was using it to punish the country\u2019s armed forces which had defeated terrorism.<\/p>\n

He said the government had planned to amend the PTA with retrospective effect and the main purpose of that was to punish the war heroes to please the West.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris said the TNA had invited visiting Australian Foreign Minister to send their judges to an international court in Sri Lanka to investigate alleged war crimes.<\/p>\n

“As the joint Opposition, we ask TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran whether they had any right to ask for foreign judges to come to Sri Lanka.”<\/p>\n

Former Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena, Wimal Weerawansa, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Chandrasiri Gajadeera and Colombo District MP Udaya Gammanpila also addressed the media.<\/p>\n
