The Police earlier claimed that the students became aggressive as there were no officials at the University Grants Commission (UGC) to meet the students. Police also lied before the public that students were not assaulted but only dispersed.

All people who have clear visions saw the video clips on the national electronic media and the social media how policemen armed with batons assaulted a female student who was crying in pain. According to the minister, when the student protest had taken a turn towards the worse, a Police Sergeant had run into the room of the Secretary to the Commission and stated that the Police could accompany five students if the Commission was ready to start a dialogue on the student demands.

When the Commission Secretary had agreed, the Sergeant had left his walkie-talkie and the baton on the Secretary’s table and had left the room. The UGC had later returned the walkie-talkie, but kept the baton as a proof for evidence. Minister Kiriella claims that the baton is the best piece of evidence to challenge the Police claim that there were no officials at the UGC at that time to meet the students. The Secretary had remained till 9.00 p.m. on that day.

Minister Kiriella addressing the media last week, made a serious charge that while the UGC officials were ready to meet the students, the Police had assaulted the students. Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan also told Parliament that the Police ran after retreating students and assaulted them mercilessly. It was crystal clear that the Police never used force to disperse the students, but used criminal force with batons to launch a merciless attack on the students.

In a civilized society, Policemen are not allowed to physically handle female students or suspects. There are Woman Police Constables to handle suspects of their own gender. Here, we saw three to four policemen armed with batons physically dragging that young female student by her hands and body assaulting her on the head and back forcing one of the male students to intervene to save his female colleague.

The female student who was assaulted was shamed in public. She was dragged by her T-Shirt. One cop caught her by the waist of her denim trouser to drag her and the trouser lowered…. and the hands of cops who assaulted touched her body, while she screamed in pain after a baton charge on her head. We have never seen a group of policemen assaulting and physically dragging a young girl by her hands and body like that in public. It looked like indirect ‘molesting,’ while being tortured similar to what late President of Uganda Idi Amin committed on young female students with his military cohorts at the Makerere University who disobeyed his orders in Kampala. The Colombo cops behaved like Idi Amin’s cohorts when they were indirectly molesting and assaulting that female student.

As far as the Minister is concerned, the Police have deliberately misled the students and they have turned aggressive. Had the Police conveyed the correct message that the UGC officials were ready for talks; the ugly scene would have been avoided. Minister Kiriella says that a top level probe is underway to punish the culprits. The cop who left his walkie-talkie and baton should be summoned before that probe as a key suspect. He had failed to convey the UGC Secretary’s message to start talks between the UGC officials and the students.

Those senior police officials at the scene should also be taken to task for being mere spectators, while a young female student was being brutally assaulted before their eyes. Surely, those Cops who assaulted that young girl may be fathers of young daughters. Minister Kiriella himself is a father of two daughters and that is why he said; ‘we too have children. We will leave no stone unturned and ensure that all those responsible for the dastardly attack on students will be punished’. The public place their faith and trust in Minister Kiriella to witness early justice.

The young female student who was brutally assaulted on the head is suffering from constant severe headaches every day. Every father who has daughters is deeply pained by this brutal assault on that young girl student. It’s a shame on the Police Mr. Inspector General of Police!

Courtesy:Ceylon Today

By Prasad Gunewardene University Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella having collected all facts that led to the recent clash between the Police and the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA) students and the subsequent untruths unfolded by the Police to the public is now ready to take on the Police to recommend tough action …

Continue reading ‘New Battle Begins as Minister Lakshman Kiriella Confronts the Police Recommending Tough Action Against Khakied Culprits who Assaulted Protesting Students’ »

[12
