{"id":43765,"date":"2015-10-29T17:52:18","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T21:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=43765"},"modified":"2015-10-29T17:52:18","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T21:52:18","slug":"protests-in-uk-over-appointment-of-austin-fernandos-son-in-law-manoj-warnapala-as-consular-division-head-of-sri-lankan-high-commission-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=43765","title":{"rendered":"Protests in UK Over Appointment of Austin Fernando&#8217;s Son in law Manoj Warnapala as Consular Division Head of Sri Lankan High Commission in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The United National Party, UK Branch as well as British Sri Lanka Forum have strongly protested against the appointment of a UK based dual citizen Manoj Warnapala as the head of the Consular Division of the Sri Lankan HC in London.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They alleged that Warnapala being a lawyer and UK qualified solicitor could benefit from the diplomatic appointment at the expense of other Sri Lankan lawyers\/law firms.<\/p>\n<p>Those campaigning against the appointment asserted that the government favoured Warnapala as he was the son-in-law of Eastern Province Governor and former Polonnaruwa District Government Agent Austin Fernando. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They also expressed concern over the appointment of a person outside the Foreign Service and Administrative Service to handle confidential documents at the mission.<\/p>\n<p>They have made representations to Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Acting British HC Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa.<\/p>\n<p>A section of the media also attacked Foreign Secretary Chitranganee Wagiswara for allegedly facilitating the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to allegations, government sources said that dual citizens had received diplomatic appointments under successive governments. Former HC Chris Nonis was a dual citizen.
