Session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on Thursday, that \u201cmeaningful devolution of authority\u201d to the provinces under the 13 th. Amendment of the Lankan constitution, and \u201cbuilding on it\u201d, are essential for ethnic reconciliation in the island nation.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the consensual adoption of the US-led resolution on Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka, which Lanka had co-sponsored with 36 other members, Indian Ambassador Ajit Kumar said that it is India\u2019s \u201cfirm belief\u201d that the way to reconciliation is through devolution of power.<\/p>\n<p>India hopes that given the \u201csagacity and political will\u2019 of its leadership, Lanka will move towards \u201cgenuine\u201d reconciliation and development, he said.  <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndia has always supported efforts to preserve Sri Lanka&#8217;s character as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious society in which all citizens, including the Sri Lankan Tamil community, can live in equality, safety and harmony, and prosper and fulfill their aspirations within a united Sri Lanka,\u201d Kumar said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sri Lanka<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sri Lankan Ambassdor Ravinatha Aryasinha said the resolution encourages and inspires the Government and the people of Lanka to travel the path they had taken since the January 8 Presidential election, to uphold human rights, establish rule of law, end impunity, strengthen democracy and good governance.<br \/>\n\u201cIn a clear departure from the past when this Council witnessed the Sri Lanka situation as divisive, today, the Council is joining my delegation to adopt a resolution by consensus, reflecting the common objective of my country, members of this Council and the larger community of stakeholders in Sri Lanka,\u201d Aryasinha said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>China said that it supports Lanka\u2019s decision to co-sponsor the resolution though it is, in principle, opposed to country-specific resolutions and the use of human rights as a devise to interfere in the internal affairs sovereign states.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, in deference to Lankan sensitivities, the US-led resolution mentions that it respects the sovereignty, integrity and unity of Sri Lanka.  <\/p>\n<p>The UK described Lanka\u2019s decision to co-sponsor the resolution as a \u201chistorical\u201d one. <\/p>\n<p> South Africa described it as a \u201cturning point\u201d in the relationship between Lanka and the UNHRC and offered to help Lanka move towards ethnic reconciliation through \u201cnon- prescriptive\u201d methods.<\/p>\n<p><em>Courtesy:New Indian Express<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"tweetbutton43318\" class=\"tw_button\" style=\"float:right;margin-left:10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdbsjeyaraj.com%2Fdbsj%2F%3Fp%3D43318&amp;text=Devolution%20Of%20Power%20Essential%20for%20Reconciliation%2C%20India%20Tells%20Lanka%20at%20UNHRC%20In%20Geneva&amp;related=&amp;lang=en&amp;count=horizontal\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  style=\"width:55px;height:22px;background:transparent url('https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-tweet-button\/tweetn.png') no-repeat  0 0;text-align:left;text-indent:-9999px;display:block;\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By P.K.Balachandran India told Sri Lanka at the 30th.
