{"id":42790,"date":"2015-08-21T19:23:16","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T23:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42790"},"modified":"2015-08-21T22:58:16","modified_gmt":"2015-08-22T02:58:16","slug":"president-sirisena-expands-his-control-slowly-over-the-upfa-and-its-key-constituent-slfp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42790","title":{"rendered":"President Sirisena  Expands his Control  Slowly over the UPFA and its Key Constituent SLFP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By P K Balachandran <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is slowly but steadily gaining control over the opposition United Peoples\u2019 Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its main constituent, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which, during and prior to the August 17 parliamentary elections were under the de facto control of former Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42798\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MR-MS-BBC.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42798\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MR-MS-BBC-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"pic: facebook.com\/BBCSinhala\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" class=\"size-large wp-image-42798\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">pic: facebook.com\/BBCSinhala<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Friday, the pro-Sirisena and pro-Rajapaksa factions in the UPFA agreed on a compromise list of people who should be nominated to the 12 \u201cNational List\u201d parliamentary seats allotted to the party following the August 17 elections.<\/p>\n<p>Among the nominees are those of the Sirisena faction who had failed to get elected to parliament.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe 12 nominees are:  Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Thilanga Sumathipala, Sarath Amunugama, Dilan Perera, Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa, S.B. Dissanayake, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Malith Jayatilake, M.L.A.M. Hisbullah, Angajan Ramanathan, A.H.M. Fowzie and Faizer Mustapha.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Central Committee of the SLFP met, with both the pro-Sirisena and pro-Rajapaksa groups participating.
