The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is to sign an MoU with the United National Party for the formation of a national government for a period of at least two years with the objective of solving burning issues faced by the country.<\/p>\n

The SLFP Central Committee which met under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the latter’s official residence yesterday, approved the formation of a national government with the United National Party led United National Front for Good Governance which bagged 106 seats at the 2015 parliamentary election.<\/p>\n

According to UPFA Acting General Secretary Professor Viswa Warnapala, a six member committee was appointed to discuss the formation of a national government.<\/p>\n

He said that this committee will discuss on the formation of national government in detail.<\/p>\n

The committee headed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga also comprises former parliamentarians Nimal Siripala De Silva, Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Susil Premajayantha, Mahinda Samarasinghe and S.B. Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

The committee was scheduled to meet yesterday evening too under the patronage of former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.<\/p>\n

Political sources said that this committee has been tasked with reaching a consensus for the formation of a national government that will pave the way for solving the major issues faced by the country.<\/p>\n

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga received a thunderous ovation as she entered the room where the Central Committee met. She appeared at the Central committee of the party after a lapse of 10 years.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Central Committee meeting, a senior SLFP Central Committee member stated that divisions within the SLFP could have been averted, and party could have won the election, if a compromise candidate was named a prime ministerial aspirant .<\/p>\n

Former Parliamentarians Dullus Alahapperuma, Kumara Welgama and Pavithra Wanniarachchi have vehemently opposed the formation of a national government.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been stressing on the need for forming a consensus government with the support of all parties represented in parliament to solve the major issues and face the challenges that lie ahead for the country.<\/p>\n

Political sources said the committee headed by former President Kumaratunga met at the BMICH yesterday and their discussions focused on how the SLFP could make their contribution in forming a national government to solve issues of the country. <\/p>\n
