{"id":42719,"date":"2015-08-17T18:17:31","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T22:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42719"},"modified":"2015-08-17T18:17:31","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T22:17:31","slug":"sri-lanka-cannot-move-forward-if-mahinda-become-premier-under-president-sirisena-says-prime-minister-ranil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42719","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka Cannot Move Forward if Mahinda Become Premier Under President Sirisena says Prime Minister Ranil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By<\/p>\n<p>P.K.Balachandran<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> As the month-long campaign for the August 17 Sri Lankan parliamentary elections closed this weekend, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe warned of a constitutional logjam if Mahinda Rajapaksa becomes Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Prime Minister can take the country forward while being at loggerheads with the President,\u201d Wickremesinghe said, alluding to the on-going public spat between his rival, former President Rajapaksa, and the incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena. <\/p>\n<p>While Wickremesinghe has good relations with Sirisena, having fought the January 8 Presidential election as allies, Rajapaksa and Sirisena have been at daggers drawn since Sirisena quit his party to fight Rajapaksa as the Joint Opposition Candidate in the Presidential election.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They are fighting over the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United Peoples\u2019 Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and also the Premiership. While Rajapaksa is desperate to become PM, Sirisena has told him that he will not appoint him PM under any circumstance. To weaken Rajapaksa\u2019s hold over UPFA and SLFP, Sirisena has sacked their General Secretaries.<\/p>\n<p>Rebutting Rajapaksa\u2019s charge that he will yield to the demand of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for a \u201cfederal constitution\u201d and eventually \u201can independent Tamil Eelam,\u201d Wickremesinghe has said that he is only for a \u201cunitary\u201d constitution.<\/p>\n<p>On Rajapaksa\u2019s charge that he has stopped all developmental work started in his time; stopped Chinese-funded projects; and had fallen prey to Western machinations, Wickremesinghe\u2019s has said that all projects, except one, have been reassessed; renegotiated for favourable terms; and restarted.
