{"id":42358,"date":"2015-07-28T21:59:25","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T01:59:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42358"},"modified":"2015-07-28T21:59:25","modified_gmt":"2015-07-29T01:59:25","slug":"mahinda-rajapaksa-pledges-to-introduce-new-constitution-within-6-months-of-upfa-forming-govt-after-aug-17th-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=42358","title":{"rendered":"Mahinda Rajapaksa Pledges to Introduce New Constitution within 6 Months of UPFA Forming Govt After Aug 17th Poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Dasun Edirisinghe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new Constitution would be introduced within six months of UPFA forming a government after the August 17 polls, former President and UPFA Prime\u2008Ministerial Candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the UPFA manifesto launching ceremony at the Henry Pedris grounds in Colombo, Rajapaksa said Parliament would sit as a Constituent Assembly to draw up the new Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of the UPFA manifesto for the August 17 general election titled, A Guarantee for the Future\u2019 (Anagathayata Sahathikayak) was presented to Ven. Pallaththara Dammajothi Thera and Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusaladamma Thera by former President Rajapaksa.<\/p>\n<p>It was presented to him by UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa said they also would introduce electoral reforms to ensure participation of grassroots level people in the administration as in \u2018Gam Sabhas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that he had taken over the country when it was about to be divided in 2005 and taken it forward during the last 10 years, but the present UNP government had taken the country 20 years back during the last six months.<\/p>\n<p>He said that 60,000 youths and the founder Leader of the JVP Rohana Wijeweera had been brutally murdered by a UNP government during the period 1987-1990, but the present JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake had thrown in his lot with the UNP to form a government.<\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa said the JVP had failed to include one word regarding mass killings of their members under the UNP government in its election manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If those 60,000 youths were alive today, they might be of the same age as Anura Kumara Dissanayake, but he has forgotten,&#8221; Rajapaksa said, adding that he was ready to take care of parents of youth killed in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My government never left any room for another youth armed struggle,&#8221; Rajapaksa said, noting that the UNP attacked university students who went in a protest march demanding Mahapola payments. &#8220;Bhikkhu undergraduates, too, were attacked and jailed recently by the present UNP government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa said that Mahapola payments would be increased to Rs. 6,000 under the future UFPA government.<\/p>\n<p>The previous government had provided jobs to graduates who passed out until 2013, but the current government had abandoned that scheme, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will introduce a Rs. 50,000 loan scheme for those who failed to enter a university after passing the GCE (Advanced Level) examination to continue their higher education,&#8221; the former President said.<\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa said that future UPFA government would provide broadband facilities for all households instead of the unsuccessful Wi-Fi scheme introduced by the UNP government to hoodwink the youth, having promised to provide them with free Internet facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will recommence 58,000 development projects which were stopped by the UNP and reinstate 1.5 million people who have lost jobs,&#8221; he said, adding that they also would complete 99 per cent of the electricity and infrastructure facilities begun by the previous government.<\/p>\n<p>The former President said the UNP had started forcing a people\u2019s representative to kneel down in Agalawatte town by one of its MPs now it had become worse.<\/p>\n<p>The UPFA manifesto also promised to punish those involved in the bond scam and get back Rs. 6,000 billion already lost due to it.<\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa said that the implementation of programmes promised in the manifesto would be commenced within 30 days of forming the new government.<\/p>\n<p><em>Courtesy:The Island<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"tweetbutton42358\" class=\"tw_button\" style=\"float:right;margin-left:10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdbsjeyaraj.com%2Fdbsj%2F%3Fp%3D42358&amp;text=Mahinda%20Rajapaksa%20Pledges%20to%20Introduce%20New%20Constitution%20within%206%20Months%20of%20UPFA%20Forming%20Govt%20After%20Aug%2017th%20Poll&amp;related=&amp;lang=en&amp;count=horizontal\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  style=\"width:55px;height:22px;background:transparent url('https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-tweet-button\/tweetn.png') no-repeat  0 0;text-align:left;text-indent:-9999px;display:block;\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dasun Edirisinghe A new Constitution would be introduced within six months of UPFA forming a government after the August 17 polls, former President and UPFA Prime\u2008Ministerial Candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.
