Commenting on the video clip being circulated in the social media in which former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is shown trying to attack a supporter at a rally held in Akuressa, Public Order and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga said that people do not expect such a conduct from a former Executive President of the country.<\/p>\n

Amaratunga said that the former President is in a mental strain after having lost his kingdom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were reports that the UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha was attacked by him,.\u201d he said.
\nAmaratunga said that the former President is in distress after having lost power as an Executive President in the country.<\/p>\n

Justice Deputy Minister and UNP Colombo District candidate Sujeewa Senasinghe said Mahinda Rajapaksa had once again exhibited his heritage of detesting opposing views openly by assaulting an ordinary citizen at a public rally held in Akuressa.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Minister in a statement issued yesterday said assaulting of an unarmed civilian by Rajapaksa having the privileged of a security battalion protecting him as a former President amounted to an insult to morality and a breach of country\u2019s laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was because he was extremely power hungry that he had descended to the level of attaching an ordinary party supporter attending an election rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis clearly proved the allegations of attacks abduction and assassination of people during the era where white van culture was created by using state power. \u201cRecently, there were reports about an assault on the UPFA General Secretary as well. Certain UPFA candidates today alleged that candidates supporting Mahinda Rajapaksa were intimidating candidates supporting President Maithripala Sirisena. Reports about threats, intimidation and requests to desist from marking preference votes can be seen in media statements made by them.<\/p>\n

\u201cA person elected as a President in a country should act in an exemplary manner considering the whole country and its people as his responsibility but the fact that Mahinda Rajapaksa acted as President on the basis of tribalism was evident from his past activities as well. \u201cOpposition politicians and journalists who expressed opposing views were attacked and media institutions were set on fire during his period of rule. Mahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s behaviour of attacking his own supporters today shows that he has been driven to a rage. Mahinda Rajapaksa who acted in a rage when in power is now showing the same traits after losing power and facing defeat once again exposed his true nature and character\u201d.
\nMahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s cohorts who hold press conference and complain that his life is in danger should realise that their own supporters are in danger due to Mahidna Rajapaksa.<\/p>\n

It is now clearly evident to the people that Rajapaksa\u2019s mingling with people at election rallies today posed a danger to themselves rather than Rajapaksa himself.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a video clip in which former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is shown trying to attack a supporter at a rally held in Akuressa is being circulated in the social media rapidly. The rally was organized by the UPFA Akuressa organizer Manoj Peiris.<\/p>\n

The video clip shows the former President looking annoyed at a participant and raising his hands to attack him. However, his security men pushed him back. Later he was seen waving to the crowd from the stage.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the former President\u2019s spokesman Rohan Welivita yesterday said that the former President did not attempt to attack the participant who was an ardent supporter of the SLFP.<\/p>\n

He said that the ground where the rally was held was so crowded and the former president moved to the stage through the cheering crowds with difficulty. Welivita said the former President was only untangling his hands when this supporters tried to hold his hands several times due to affection towards the president\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said that the government is trying to mislead the people by giving prominence to this video clip to convince the public that the former President attacked his supporter at Akuressa. \u201cThe former President did not attack any supporters as claimed by the opponents who are circulating this video clip in the social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said that the government has stooped to such a low level so as to use such mean tactics to prevent a UPFA victory. <\/p>\n
