Former External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris yesterday alleged that Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe’s attack on former Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) D.E.W. Gunasekera was nothing but an assault on the parliamentary system itself.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris was responding to Premier Wickremesinghe accusing General Secretary of the Communist Party Gunasekara of misleading Parliament as well as the country as regards investigations undertaken by a 13-member subcommittee of the COPE into the alleged Central Bank bond scam.<\/p>\n

The SLFPer said that Gunasekera had earned the wrath of the UNP in the wake of COPE revelations. Prof. Peiris pointed out that all six reports submitted by the former COPE chief during 2010-2014 period had been acceptable to the UNP and no one questioned the veteran politician’s integrity until he intervened in the Central Bank affair.<\/p>\n

Responding to a query, Prof. Peiris said that issues arising out of the mega fraud couldn’t be swept under the carpet by taking cover behind parliamentary privileges. Peiris said that the alleged bond scam would be a major issue at the forthcoming parliamentary election.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris said that the COPE probe got underway due to his moving a no faith motion against Central bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran. The then Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, after having ruled that it could be debated referred the matter to the COPE, he said.<\/p>\n

In fact, there hadn’t been a previous instance of the Speaker referring such a matter to the COPE, the former law professor said, adding that 88 members of the previous Parliament signed the motion against Mahendran.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris said that the next SLFP-led UPFA government would take punitive action against all those responsible.<\/p>\n

SLFP Gen. Sec. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa yesterday told a packed media briefing at SLFP headquarters that the UNP was in dire straits due to the Central Bank scam. The UNP’s response reflected the crisis faced by party in the run-up to the general election, Yapa said, asserting the transaction caused irreparable loss to the national economy.<\/p>\n

Prof. Peiris pointed out that former Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal had estimated the losses suffered due to this transaction so far at Rs. 59 bn in additional interest.<\/p>\n
