Wigneswaran is currently up in arms over the allocation of funds to the Northern Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarians from the Central Government.

Wigneswaran’s accusation of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarians from the Northern Province obtaining funds from the Central Government and on the negligence of the Central Government in allocating adequate funds for the Northern Provincial Council has turned into a prime issue in the Northern political scene in recent days.

Until the change of government in January this year, the Northern Provincial Council was grumbling that the funds meant for the Council were channelled through the former Northern Governor who was a retired military officer and the functions of the Council were manipulated by the Governor.

The TNA Parliamentarians were also supportive of the Northern Chief Minister on his claim of Rajapaksa regime handling the NPC through former Governor Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri.

However, former Governor Chandrasiri refuted the claim by Chief Minister Wigneswaran saying that the NPC was not development oriented and the funds allocated for the Council, since its inception, were not properly utilized and therefore, he intervened to make use of those funds for development activities instead of returning it to the Treasury.

Governor Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri

The Northern Provincial Council succeeded in removing former Governor Chandrasiri with the change of Government in January this year. As the TNA led NPC is now hardly in conflict with the new Governor it has accused the fellow TNA party men in Parliament of obtaining funds recently from the Central Government for the Northern Province.

Chief Minister Wigneswaran coming hard on the TNA Parliamentarians said that they had let down the NPC by obtaining funds directly from the Central Government.

Wigneswaran also pointed out that with the creation of the NPC the funds meant for the Northern Province should be allocated through the institution.

Chief Minister Wigneswaran who is urging for more allocation of funds for the Northern Provincial Council convinced President Maithripala Sirisena in setting up a Chief Minister’s Fund for the development activities in the North, recently.

A week ago at a meeting with President Sirisena, Chief Minister Wigneswaran explained to him the necessity of launching the Chief Minister’s Fund for the Northern Province to tap the diaspora abroad to receive the funds.

The misunderstanding of the NPC with regard to the allocation of funds to the Northern Parliamentarians by the Central Government surfaced following Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to the Northern Province, a month ago.

Chief Minister Wigneswaran and his NPC Councillors boycotted the functions attended by the Prime Minister, in the Northern Province, saying that they were not properly invited for the events attended by the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe

Responding to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister said that he could directly engage in the development activities in the Northern Province with the cooperation of the TNA Parliamentarians in the North.

The ‘brawl’ between the Prime Minister and the Northern Chief Minister was also clearly visible at the ceremony at Palaly where the lands in the High Security Zone were returned to their legitimate owners from the Valikamam North region.

Ranil Wickremesinghe and Wigneswaran were on the stage at the event and avoided looking at each other.
So, in the backdrop of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and Wigneswaran falling apart, funds have been allocated for the Northern Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarians by the Central Government for the development activities in their respective constituencies.

Wigneswaran while praising the transparency of obtaining the funds from the Government by the TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran had pointed out that whatever funds for the Northern Province should have been channelled through the NPC and not through the TNA Parliamentarians.

However, the TNA Parliamentarians including Suresh Premachandran are furious over the accusation made by the Northern Chief Minister of obtaining funds from the Central Government.

TNA Parliamentarian Mavai Senathiraja

The ITAK leader and the TNA Parliamentraian Mavai Senathiraja who had stepped down on the insistence of the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan and paved way for Wigneswaran to contest as the Chief Ministerial candidate had even asked for explanation from Wigneswaran over his accusation of TNA Parliamentarians obtaining funds from the Central Government.

According to Suresh Premachandran the TNA Parliamentarians were allocated as usual with the funds which were meant for the development of their constituencies by the Central Government.

“Even before the establishment of the NPC, funds were allocated for the Northern Parliamentarians. The funds for the NPC are allocated separately. Each Councillor has been allocated with nearly Rs 6 million. So the Chief Minister’s accusation is meaningless,” Premachandran said. While emphasizing the necessity of Northern Parliamentarians and Provincial Councillors working together in development activities, Premachandran regretted that the NPC hardly had any interaction so far with the TNA Parliamentarians over the development activities in the North.

So, as the dissolution of Parliament is expected at any moment, the brawl between the TNA led NPC and the Alliance’s Parliamentarians in the North has clearly indicated the ‘grey side’ of their political activities in the region.

TNA being reputed as a formidable political force in the North and the East, the tussle which begins to brew between the Alliance’s legislators and the Provincial Councillors highlight that there is no need for an outside force to weaken the integrity of the TNA but the attitude of those who hold responsible positions in the outfit itself, could very well lead towards its downfall in the future.
This had been the history of the Tamil politics in the past.

Courtesy:Ceylon Today

By Manekshaw Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Chief Minister C.V.
