My good friend Vasudeva Nanayakkara has been unapologetic about his use of a “P” word in the recent heated argument with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, in Parliament.<\/p>\n

Vasudeva seems to be still reeling with anger, with whatever happened about his Point of Order issue with the Prime Minister. In any event he is not one who needs to be taught the meaning of words in the Sinhala language. He is a fluent orator in Sinhala, a good writer in the language, and very knowledgeable about proper use of the language; which has nothing to do with his having been the Minister of National Languages.<\/p>\n

What surprises me is that it required Bandula Gunewardena, former Minister of Education and a tuition master with vast experience in the generation of wealth through tuition, to teach this country, and especially the Sinhala speaking people that the “P” word uttered and angrily repeated by Vasudeva is not an expletive, but part of good and wholly acceptable language.<\/p>\n

Yes, it is in the Sinhala dictionary. Let\u2019s refer to it as the p*ka word – usually an expletive for the penis. As Gunewardena has correctly explained, it means a fruit, a mature fruit. Very simply said “P*ka is also “pala”. What Gunewardena has shown with his explanation is that the Speaker was ignorant of this aspect of “p*ka” use when he cautioned Vasu that there were schoolchildren in the galleries of Parliament.<\/p>\n

It is obviously time for both parents and teachers to make p*ka part of the ordinary vocabulary in Sinhala. With the Gunewardena\u2019s TV broadcast in defence of Vasudeva\u2019s language use, the people are aware of this new dimension of p*ka in our language and its varied and interesting uses.<\/p>\n

There is no need anymore for a parent to tell a child to pluck a mango fruit or “amba gediya”. It is quite in order to tell the child to pluck the “amba p*ka. This could well extend to a king coconut or “thambili p*kaya” or an orange fruit or \u2018dodam p*kaya”.<\/p>\n

Apart from fruits from trees this P word can come into all aspects of politics or other discussions. We can easily get rid of using “pukkha” for something good and fruitful. It will be so much simpler to refer to p*ka economic progress, when we talk of fruitful economic progress. There is also the opportunity for “p*ka development – that politicians always like to talk about, whether the development is actually fruitful or not.<\/p>\n

Make sure that you don\u2019t refer to any \u2018pukkha idea\u2019 but pause and refer to it as a p*ka or fruitful idea.<\/p>\n

Having known Vasudeva for so many years, from almost the time he began revolutionary politics, I am truly surprised that he had to wait so long to make this revolutionary impact on the modern use of the Sinhala language. Yet, something tells me that he may not be too pleased about Bandula Gunewardena making use of his use of the p*ka word in parliament, to present himself as a new TV tutor on the use of Sinhala.<\/p>\n

I certainly don\u2019t regard this p*ka episode as the height of Vasu\u2019s days in politics or parliament. There is much more that I would like to remember him for. But here is no escaping that through the tutorial zeal of Bandula Gunewardena, more than his raging anger at Ranil Wickremasinghe, he has brought about an interesting addition to the political lingo of this country.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt that p*ka is used in classical Sinhala writing and in poetry. It has been taught in schools, where pupils would have learnt it, though not in terms of its use as an angry expletive. But such is the trend of politics today that parliamentary debate and verbal give and take saw the highest and often most entertaining in standards of language, has come to the p*ka level of clearly fruitful debate.<\/p>\n

The footnote to the Bandula Gunewardena explanation of the p*ka word, which is also in the same dictionary is that “p*ka” means the male sexual organ in obscene language.<\/p>\n

So let the \u2018p ….\u2019 in politics have their day, enjoying fruitful language.<\/p>\n
