To witness the day to day happenings in the country is to watch how we as a nation are committing hara-kiri.

Two weeks ago some politicians were shouting themselves hoarse against the Tamils singing the National Anthem in their mother tongue. They said it was another manifestation of their thrust for an eelam! Isn’t it better for them to sing understanding the meaning, provided it is a direct translation with no additions or omissions.

The amendments to the constitution could be made if necessary. I am a Buddhist who believes that it is more meaningful to chant Gathas in Sinhala rather than in Pali which most Buddhists do not understand.

We now find the same group of politicians demonstrating a distorted national flag without the stripes representing the minorities. This act promotes the eelam ideal in a very big way. For a very senior politician, a mouthpiece of the group, to apologise for the grave error is not good enough.

Every one should have realized the gravity on first seeing the flag. An inquiry should be held as to who was behind it and which organisation produced the flag in such numbers. They all should be indicted for acting against our constitution.

The overnight sit-in in the Chamber of the parliament (with all the gossip about the happenings that night) is the most disgraceful act that has desecrated the hallowed chamber. It is a shame that none of the senior politicians taking part, some with over thirty years as parliamentarians, did not for a moment think of what they were doing. Didn’t they realize they should have done it outside in the corridors or elsewhere in that huge building complex?

They were lying, dining and sleeping on the carpet demanding that their alleged misdeeds should not be inquired into but be swept under the carpet! One may interpret that this disgraceful lot rather deserve the “floor” than the “seat”. It is up to the electorate to see that these self seeking wrong doers are thrown out altogether at the coming elections.

The organized protests in front of the courts of law are another challenge to the legal system in our country. This brings to mind why the law could not take effect during the recent past. As much as the government is reducing high security areas in the North and East, they should declare high security areas around the court houses when sensitive cases are taken up.

The Central Bank Bond Issue episode is yet another black mark. The panel of inquiry, with questionable credentials to begin with, finds that the board of directors is responsible for the irregularity. Their finding that the Governor is totally unaware when his son in law is the main beneficiary is beyond belief. The position of the Governor is untenable. Earlier he leaves voluntarily, better it is for the credibility of this important institution.

There is still a silver lining in the dark cloud. I congratulate the president on maintaining his dignity and decorum amidst all the provocation. His recent address to the nation demonstrated superb statesmanship. The fact that he did not depend on somebody else’s notes showed that his words of wisdom were truly genuine. His pledge and his selfless actions up to now reassure us that he will be a servant for his countrymen rather than a self seeking king. He gives much hope for the nation. It is commendable that the parliament has almost unanimously passed the 19th amendment to the constitution to secure the democratic future of the nation.

No stretch of imagination can make one believe that a tainted ruler with dictatorial tendencies, could reincarnate himself at the age of seventy as a benevolent leader.

Let all of us rally round the president and make this nation great again!

Courtesy:The Island

by Dr. Sarath Gamini De Silva.
