Secretary General of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) V. Anandasangaree has requested Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya not to recognise the four-party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) under any circumstances. Veteran politician Anandasangaree told The Island that poll chief\u2019s recognition would be a great injustice to those who had suffered due to LTTE terrorism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The TULF chief yesterday released the letter headlined \u2018Protest against the use of the term Tamil National Alliance aka TNA\u2019 handed over to Deshapriya:<\/em><\/p>\n

“I<\/strong> wish to lodge my strong protest against the continued use of the name “Tamil National Alliance” aka TNA by any political formation other than the originally formed alliance, by a group of four political parties, named Tamil United Liberation Front, All Ceylon Tamil Congress, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation and the Eelam People\u2019s Revolutionary Liberation Front, all of which are individually recognised and registered as Political Parties by you.<\/p>\n

To make it easy for you to understand the reasons for my protest, it is necessary for me to trace the history of the TNA from the time of its inauguration till it was used last at the Provincial Council elections, to the North and the East. The use of the term TNA without a corresponding symbol for it has created a lot of confusion and misunderstandings. It has been identified as the main cause for such confusions in the midst of candidates.<\/p>\n

On the 22nd of October 2001 the said four Political Parties, the Tamil United Liberation Front, All Ceylon Tamil Congress, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation and the Eelam People\u2019s Revolutionary Liberation Front aka TULF, ACTC, TELO and EPRLF joined together and signed a MOU(copy attached) to work on a common programme and issued the following statement to the media signed by M\/s R. Sampanthan, N. Kumarakuruparan, N. Prasanna and K. Premachandran respectively as secretaries of the said four Political Parties. The statement says, “In accordance with the unanimous decision of the TULF, ACTC, TELO and EPRLF the said parties joined and formed this alliance, to contest the forth coming elections on the label of the TULF and its symbol “the rising sun”. Since contradictory reports appeared in the media about our decision to join and function together, we are releasing the joint statement to the media.<\/p>\n

In accordance with the MOU the TNA comprised these four Parties contested the Parliamentary General Elections on 5.12.2001 and won 15 seats, TULF 6, ACTC 3, TELO 4, EPRLF 1, and National list 1. Of these 6 elected from the TULF Mr. Mavai Senathirajah was one.<\/p>\n

Everything went on well till the election of the President on the demise of the former President of the TULF Mr. M. Sivasithamparam on the 05th of June, 2002. A meeting was fixed for that purpose and I was declared elected unanimously as the President of the Party. The noted absentee at this meeting was Mr. Mavai Senathirajah. He was elected second to me with a deference of about 3,000 votes at the Parliamentary elections. It should also be observed that he was appointed as a nominated Member of Parliament twice to fill Mr. A. Amirthalingam\u2019s vacancy and a second time to fill Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam\u2019s vacancy, following their assassinations.<\/p>\n

Mr. Mavai Senathirajah, a responsible member of the TNA used to visit Vanni to meet the LTTE Leaders for reasons best known only to him. On one such occasion a media reported under the heading “Mavai meets LTTE in Kilinochchi” which said “TULF MP Mavai Senathirajah who is in the process of reviving the Federal Party visited Kilinochchi and had meetings with LTTE\u2019s deputy political Commissar Thangan on 14.10.2003. The revival of the Federal Party is being undertaken at the behest of the LTTE”. At that time coming under the influence of the LTTE he was assigned a special task. When questioned by the reporter of the Sunday Times of 19thOctober 2003, “Is it because the LTTE wanted to get rid of the TULF Leadership that they have instructed you to revive the Federal Party?” for which his reply was “This is not true. I totally reject it”. The fact that the LTTE was using him to harm me and what task had been assigned to him are clear from the annexed document in the following Para appearing in English.<\/p>\n

“LTTE activities in Colombo” – “On the instruction of Pottuamman (TOSIS Leader) Murugan Kalaichelvan (a native of Ratnapura residing at Mullaitivu since 1983 \u2013 an LTTE Intelligence cadre) has been deployed as a “Clerical Hand” with Mr. Mavai Senathirajah (TULF MP JFN) While he is presently residing with Mrs. S. Packiyam at No. 129\/9, Kadawatha Road, Nedimale, Dehiwala, he arrives at the TULF office at 30\/1A, Alwis Place, CBO 3 along with Mr. Mavai Senathirajah. He has been tasked to target Mr. W. Anandasangaree (President TULF)”. If Mr. Senathirajah\u2019s “Clerical Hand” assigned to him succeeded in hitting the target, I would have gone out of the TNA automatically.<\/p>\n

Although it is not my intension to involve him in this episode I have no other way of proving that he carried out the instructions and the said, would-be assailant fled on coming to know that the cat was out of the bag through a paper report (annexed).<\/p>\n

Having failed in his mission through the “Clerical Hand”, Mr. Mavai Senathirajah arbitrarily removed the name of the TULF from the TNA and formed the new Alliance replacing the TULF with the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK). It is very obvious that the TNA that was formed on 22.10.2001 automatically got dissolved and with the step taken by Mr. Senthirajah the present one is totally a new formation. Hence nothing could be done in the Name of the TNA which either stands dissolved or got defunct.<\/p>\n

The new alliance had fraudulently and without proper authority misused the term TNA and published a manifesto for the General Election held in 2004 in its name, declaring to accept the LTTE as the national leaders of the Tamil people and also accepting the LTTE as the sole representatives of the Tamil People. The Elections held in April 2004 took place with a high percentage of impersonations. The election monitors were helpless to check this. Polling agents were not allowed to work. Men, women and children were allowed to cast votes that were not theirs. This situation helped the alliance parties to win 22 seats illegally. A request by the election monitors to have the election declared null and void was turned down by the Commissioner since there was no provision in the law to do so.<\/p>\n

I hope you will agree with me that a fraudulent organisation by repeatedly using the facilities available can\u2019t claim legitimacy or gain legal status after a period of time. Unfortunately this facility enjoyed by them has given them a new status at the International Level. No one realises that it is the innocent Tamil voters now carry the label as criminals. This alliance had directly or indirectly accepted the responsibility for all the crimes committed by the LTTE from the day election was held in April 2004 till the date of death of Mr. V. Prabakaran. This includes the assassinations of people like M\/s Luxman Kathirkamar, Joseph Parararajasingam, Chandra Nehru, Kingsly Rasanayagam, Nadarajah Raviraj, Thiyagarajah Maheswaran and many such others. This is a matter of urgent public importance, to the extent of inviting the attention of the authorities concerned.<\/p>\n

Under these circumstances I strongly urge that you should use your powers and prevent the use of the name TNA by anybody for a period of time determined by you. I also plead that the LTTE tag that had been tied on the innocent voters by this four party alliance also be removed so that the voters who voted for the TNA in the past will not be recognised as LTTE supporters. I wish to point out that the main beneficiary in this business is the Federal Party which gets the lion\u2019s share in all deals. It will not be out of place if I mention here that the Federal Party was revived on the orders of the LTTE, 26 years after the founder died and his successors wound it up to enable the TULF to function as the only successor to the Federal Party. This is confirmed by a statement issued by Mrs. Mangayatkarasi Amirthalingam wife of one of the founders of the Federal Party along with Mr. S J V Chelvanayakam and Secretary General of the TULF. In her statement she has said,

\n“My husband preserved the registration of the Federal Party for the sole purpose that no undesirable elements could misuse its symbol and the name. He never wanted to revive the Federal Party.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is a pity that some of those who have been groomed by him have attempted to misuse the name of the Federal Party and are trying to revive it. They have only breached that trust he had placed on them.<\/p>\n

Thus I categorically make it clear to all that I have neither approved nor blessed the revival of the Federal Party but instead condemn it as this act is a ploy to destroy the TULF which was formed by our great leaders”.<\/p>\n

My concern is not that they have successfully plotted to oust me from politics by using the LTTE against me. My only concern is that, innocent Tamil people whom the Federal Party is exploiting for the personal gains of some individuals who themselves are either Tigers or pro-Tigers have exploited the name of the LTTE to their maximum possible gains.”<\/p>\n
