A<\/strong> special officer is to be appointed at the Prime Minister’s office to look into the problems in the Northern Province, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday, winding up his three day visit to the Northern Province.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need to pay special focus on the development of livelihood and infrastructure facilities in the Mullaitivu and Killinochchi districts as these districts were affected by the nearly three decades of terrorism.<\/p>\n

Addressing government officials and civil society representatives at a meeting at the Killinochchi District Secretariat yesterday, the Prime Minister told the Army to conduct a special survey on the people disabled due to the conflict in the district. <\/p>\n

He said officials do not have proper statistics on disabled persons in the district and added that the lack of statics, hampers the implementation of a viable programme to help the disabled. <\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said the government was ready to launch a special programme and find more funds for the welfare of disabled people with the completion of this survey.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said a national centre for women headed families will also be set up in Killinochchi, as the largest number of women headed families are found from this district.<\/p>\n

The Premier sought a report from the Sri Lanka Army about lands that can be released to the people in the district. <\/p>\n

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe drew special attention to the expansion of irrigation tanks in the Killinochchi district. <\/p>\n

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe who arrived in Jaffna on Friday, participated in the distribution of nutrition packs to pregnant mothers as part of the programme pledged at the last presidential election. <\/p>\n

He later had a series of meeting with government officials, civil society representatives and representatives of fishing communities. His programme in Jaffna included a visit to Hartley College, the Nallur temple, meeting Hindu High Priest Somasundram Brahmacharya Adhinam, Bishop of Jaffna Rev. Thomas Saundranayagam and Bishop of Church of South India Daniel Thiagarajah.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister also participated in religious observances in Delft and Nagadeepa islands. He later visited the Sri Lanka Naval Headquarters in Jaffna. <\/p>\n
