{"id":40087,"date":"2015-03-30T05:35:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T09:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=40087"},"modified":"2015-03-30T05:36:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-30T09:36:16","slug":"singapore-bids-farewell-to-its-guiding-light-lee-kuan-yew-who-lived-and-breathed-singapore-all-his-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=40087","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Bids Farewell to its Guiding Light  Lee Kuan Yew who &#8220;Lived and Breathed Singapore all his life&#8221;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Singapore bade farewell to its founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who died on Monday aged 91.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Despite torrential rain, tens of thousands lined the streets to view the funeral procession carrying Mr Lee\u2019s coffin through the city-state.<\/p>\n<p>A state funeral then took place attended by world leaders, ahead of a private family cremation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>About 1.5m people paid tribute to Mr Lee at sites around the country this week the government said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>In his eulogy, Mr Lee\u2019s son, the current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said his father had \u201clived and breathed Singapore all his life\u201d. \u201cThe light that has guided us all these years has been extinguished,\u201d he said<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The funeral procession began as Mr Lee\u2019s body was taken from Parliament House on a gun carriage. A 21-gun salute sounded, echoing across the city, as the procession moved on into the business district and Tanjong Pagar, the docklands constituency Mr Lee represented for his whole political life.<\/p>\n<p>Military jets flew overhead while two Singaporean navy vessels conducted a sail-past of the Marina Bay barrage &#8211; the massive water conservation project spearheaded by Mr Lee.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign leaders in attendance included former US President Bill Clinton, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and UK House of Commons leader William Hague. In his emotional eulogy, Prime Minister Lee said that although his father had not lived to see Singapore\u2019s 50th anniversary celebrations later this year, the country could be proud he had \u201clived to see his life\u2019s work come to fruition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He cited the famous epitaph for Sir Christopher Wren, architect of London\u2019s St Paul\u2019s Cathedral: if you seek his monument, look around you. \u201cTo those who seek Mr Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s monument, Singaporeans can reply proudly: \u2018look around you\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>After eulogies from nine other leading figures, sirens sounded across the city to mark the beginning and end of a minute\u2019s silence.
