Defeated President Mahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s personal astrologer, Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena, has offered his services to President Maithripala Sirisena.<\/p>\n

President Maithripala Sirisena has received a letter from Abeygunawardena explaining the circumstances leading to former President\u2019s defeat while expressing a desire to serve the new leader, a senior presidential aide accompanying the President on his first official tour here told The Island yesterday.<\/p>\n

Responding to a query, the official said that Abeygunawardena lamented that President Maithripala Sirisena never invited him since the conclusion of the Jan.8 presidential election.<\/p>\n

Asked whether the President intended to respond to Abeygunawardena\u2019s offer, the official said that the President and some of those who had an opportunity to go through the letter had a hearty laugh. Some even suggested that Abeygunawardena\u2019s letter should be released to the media, but the President didn\u2019t want to embarrass him, the official said.<\/p>\n

The official said that Abeygunawardena couldn\u2019t have been faulted for seeking to switch his allegiance to President Maithripala Sirisena like many others who secured a range of perks and privileges from the former President.<\/p>\n

Former Senior Minister D. E. W. Gunasekera told The Island that the likes of Abeygunawardena, who boldly called himself the royal astrologer, caused the former President\u2019s downfall. Gunasekera alleged that Abeygunawardena\u2019s advice had prompted the former President to disregard his (Gunasekera\u2019s) repeated pleas not to call an early presidential poll.<\/p>\n

The presidential aide said that politicians wouldn\u2019t be interested in what Abeygunawardena had to offer especially after the media repeatedly quoted the astrologer as having said, “Not all of Nostradamus\u2019 predictions came true either. There was only so much I could do to help him (Mahinda Rajapaksa) win, maybe 5%. But, you must have luck to be the president.”
