Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran has reiterated his controversial call for wider UN probe into what he called genocide of Tamils since 1948 while his party, the TNA, is seeking to improve its relations with the new government,<\/p>\n

The retired Supreme Court judge sought the backing of visiting UN head of Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman for his agenda when the latter met him in Jaffna on Monday. <\/p>\n

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Subinay Nandy accompanied Feltman, a veteran US career diplomat.<\/p>\n

CM Wigneswaran has handed over an 11-page resolution calling for UN intervention here to Feltman.<\/p>\n

Well informed sources said that CM Wigneswaran hadn\u2019t received a positive response from the UN delegation.<\/p>\n

The 38-member NPC endorsed the resolution on Feb. 10, 2015.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the UN political chief met one-time Foreign Secretary and Northern Province Governor H.M.G.S. Palihakkara. Feltman met President Maithripala Sirisena and several other politicians and officials, including Rauff Hakeem and Ajith P. Perera.<\/p>\n

While CM Wigneswaram was pushing for Feltman\u2019s backing for his project, the TNA leadership decided to improve relationship with the new administration and take disciplinary action against those acting against its wishes. The top leadership had been irked by TNA activists recently setting ablaze an effigy of its National List MP M.A. Sumanthiran in Jaffna as well as protest organised opposite the US embassy in London, where photos of both R. Sampanthan and Sumanthiran were set ablaze.<\/p>\n
