He was 75.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirector Sakthi passed away at SRM hospital due to old age\u2014related ailments,\u201d a source close to the director\u2019s family told IANS.<\/p>\n<p>Sakthi started his career as a theatre artist. He floated a theatre troupe with his friends and went on to act in a few plays before moving to cinema.<\/p>\n<p>He started his career as an assistant to theatre artist Subbhu Arumugam, and worked with him on several plays.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the behest of dance master Thangappan, he joined the 1970 Tamil film \u201cAnnai Velankani\u201d as an assistant director.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, he launched actor\u2014filmmaker Kamal Haasan as a hero in his Tamil directorial debut \u201cUnarchigal\u201d, a controversial film about sexually transmitted diseases.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to direct some critically\u2014acclaimed films such as \u201cManidharil Ithanai Nirangala\u201d, \u201cDharma Yuddham\u201d and \u201cAmma Pillai\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His last directorial venture was in 1993 &#8211; the Tamil film \u201cPathini Penna&#8221; &#8211; which fetched him two State awards for best film and best dialogue writer.<\/p>\n<p>In over a decade\u2014long career, he had directed 17 films.<\/p>\n<p>Sakthi is survived by two daughters and a son.
