\nLeader of the Frontline Socialist Party Kumar Gunaratnam yesterday said that incumbent government\u2019s political duplicity had become evident in its moves to deport him while calling upon those who had fled the country for political reasons to return home. <\/strong><\/p>\n

In a press release issued yesterday, Gunaratnam says the higher echelons of government had repeatedly called upon those who had left the country to escape political victimisation to return home. “I am one such person but the very same government has got its legal experts to deport me to Australia.”<\/p>\n

Excerpts of Gunaratnam\u2019s release:<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“I was one among those who left the country owing to political reasons and threats to my life. Many of those who fled the country had to use various names and identities. I have no desire to hide the fact that I have used various names at various points. I was abducted on April 07, 2012 and was later released due to the pressure from various quarters including international organizations and governments. The then Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a statement condemning my abduction. <\/p>\n

I have not applied for dual citizenship. I want to cancel my Australian citizenship and obtain citizenship in Sri Lanka, where I was born, studied and engaged in politics. Australian authorities would not rescind my citizenship until there is an official letter from Sri Lankan authorities restoring my citizenship here.<\/p>\n

“The power to issue a letter to the effect of providing citizenship is vested with the subject minister according to the provisions of the Citizenship Act. Current subject minister is John Amaratunga and I submitted an application to him several weeks ago I have yet not received any response.<\/p>\n

There were media reports of the very same minister granting citizenship to Arjun Mahendran, a friend of the present regime and brought here from Singapore to be appointed Governor of the Central Bank. <\/p>\n

The government acted in a manner of expediency to restore the political rights of former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka and to reinstate former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. This selective dispensation of justice runs counter to democracy..<\/p>\n

“I would like to remind those at the levers of power that providing justice and rights to all those who support Ranil-Maithi government, while jailing and deporting their critics, is not good governance.”<\/p>\n
