{"id":38667,"date":"2015-02-16T19:49:30","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T00:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=38667"},"modified":"2015-02-16T23:10:46","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T04:10:46","slug":"india-scores-over-china-as-sirisena-and-modi-sign-sri-lankas-first-civil-nuclear-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=38667","title":{"rendered":"India Scores Over China as Sirisena and Modi Sign  Sri Lanka&#8217;s First Civil Nuclear Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> By<\/p>\n<p>Suhasini Haidar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a sign of a closer strategic partnership between Sri Lanka\u2019s new government and India, President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a civil nuclear cooperation agreement on Monday, which is Sri Lanka\u2019s first nuclear partnership with any country.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the bilateral agreement on civil nuclear cooperation \u201canother demonstration of our mutual trust,\u201d Mr. Modi said India and Sri Lanka had also agreed to expand defence and strategic cooperation, including a \u201ctrilateral format\u201d with the Maldives.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Modi is expected to visit Colombo in mid-March, and sources told The Hindu that he was likely to include Male in his itinerary.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Officials on both sides said the agreement on nuclear cooperation was an initial one and would not lead to the construction of nuclear energy reactors immediately. According to an official release, the agreement \u201cwould facilitate cooperation in the transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise, sharing of resources, capacity building and training of personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including use of radioisotopes, nuclear safety, radiation safety, nuclear security, radioactive waste management and nuclear and radiological disaster mitigation and environmental protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>India, Sri Lanka sign three pacts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Calling his visit to New Delhi a \u201cremarkable milestone\u201d in taking India-Sri Lanka relations to a \u201cgreater height,\u201d President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday expressed satisfaction that the visit had \u201cborne very fruitful results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sirisena and Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the signing of three agreements on agricultural cooperation, a memorandum of understanding on Nalanda University and an agreement on cultural cooperation.
