{"id":38420,"date":"2015-02-11T00:24:22","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T05:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=38420"},"modified":"2015-02-11T00:24:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T05:24:22","slug":"challenging-new-sri-lankan-govt-with-international-genocide-investigation-could-complicate-matters-new-delhi-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=38420","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Challenging new Sri Lankan Govt with International Genocide Investigation Could Complicate Matters&#8221;-New Delhi Sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> By<\/p>\n<p>Suhasini Haidar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Indian government took note of the resolution by the Sri Lankan Northern Provincial Council internally, but officials said it was too early to gauge its importance to the reconciliation process already initiated by President Maithripala Sirisena\u2019s new government. <\/p>\n<p>Officials are studying if the genocide resolution would affect the Geneva conference of the UNHRC, where the U.N. special rapporteur is due to submit a report on a U.S.-sponsored \u201cwar crimes investigations\u201d that could also lead to a resolution against Sri Lanka being tabled.<\/p>\n<p> India would be keen to see any such resolution put off, it is understood, so as to allow the new Sri Lankan government time to implement its promises to the Northern provinces.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nIndia not for war crimes probe against Sri Lanka<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any attempt to challenge the new government in Colombo with an international genocide investigation at this point could \u201ccomplicate matters,\u201d sources in New Delhi have said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. special rapporteur is expected to submit a report on a U.S.-sponsored \u201cwar crimes investigations\u201d and a resolution on Sri Lanka\u2019s \u2018genocide against Tamils\u2019 could also be tabled then. <\/p>\n<p>India has traditionally opposed any international investigation into war crimes in Sri Lanka, a position that led to India abstaining from the U.S.-backed resolution at the UNHRC in March 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told The Hindu that the issue of reconciliation and rehabilitation for the Tamil-dominated areas will be a key issue when President Sirisena meets with Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe government will be keen to discuss the new government\u2019s plans as well as the just-started talks on repatriation of 1 lakh Sri Lankan refugees living in India.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Delhi last month, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who met with Mr. Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, said that the Sirisena government would implement a \u201ccredible domestic mechanism\u201d for reconciliation, but wouldn\u2019t allow any international inquiry into allegations of human rights violations during the war against the LTTE.<\/p>\n<p>President Sirisena will visit India from February 15 to 18, his first international engagement since he was sworn in. <\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\nCourtesy:The Hindu<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"tweetbutton38420\" class=\"tw_button\" style=\"float:right;margin-left:10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdbsjeyaraj.com%2Fdbsj%2F%3Fp%3D38420&amp;text=%26%238220%3BChallenging%20new%20Sri%20Lankan%20Govt%20with%20International%20Genocide%20Investigation%20Could%20Complicate...%20&amp;related=&amp;lang=en&amp;count=horizontal\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  style=\"width:55px;height:22px;background:transparent url('https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-tweet-button\/tweetn.png') no-repeat  0 0;text-align:left;text-indent:-9999px;display:block;\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suhasini Haidar The Indian government took note of the resolution by the Sri Lankan Northern Provincial Council internally, but officials said it was too early to gauge its importance to the reconciliation process already initiated by President Maithripala Sirisena\u2019s new government.
