Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees about 100,000 in India, as other refugees in the world, are living with a hope of ending their refugee status. <\/strong>

\nChange in government in Sri Lanka has brought in refreshing changes, important among them doing away of war-centric approach. The refugees have broadly welcomed this.<\/p>\n

They are now, awaiting a durable package, assurance from governments (India, Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu and Provinces in Sri Lanka) and an MoU that guarantees orderly repatriation, resettlement and reintegration.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees have been quietly contemplating, discussing and taking the important decision of ending refugee status. They are considering options that would better their economic status, particularly in the interest of their children.

\nMany among the refugees are considering the option of returning. However, they need assistance to accomplish their desire. Agreements from the governments, packages and success stories of economic and security situation in the island would improve their confidence to return. <\/p>\n

Refugees worldwide often remain voiceless, left with no choices and pushed to take decision under duress. Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees should not be put in such predicament. OfERR, an organisation of Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees, has been walking along with refugees for the last 32 years, advocating their needs and aspirations.<\/p>\n

Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees have spoken their mind when they articulated 48 expectations to facilitate a structured return. They also deliberated upon the stages of repatriation, issues \/ vulnerabilities associated with, how these can be addressed and which government may take responsibility at each stage. They need this assurance to be able to move forward in their homeland. <\/p>\n

Refugees having lived in India have imbibed democratic values, cherish tolerance and focus on well being of everyone. The pluralistic outlook will augur well, their education and skill sets utilized for spurring economic growth and supporting under privileged in the island.<\/p>\n

It is in this context, Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees have been watching with interest the latest developments. Visit of Honorable External Affairs Minister, Government of Sri Lanka, immediately on taking up charge, to India, discussing issue of return of refugees and putting in place a process to discuss at various levels is encouraging. <\/p>\n

Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees look towards Government of Tamil Nadu, through whom they articulated their demands and bettered their lives with various support and services extended to them, to carry forward the discussions and pave the way for refugees to take an informed decision to return to the island voluntarily.
