Pallewatta Gamaralalage Kumarasinghe Sirisena known generally as P.G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena has been appointed Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom. He assumed duties amidst a simple ceremony this morning (22 January).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kumarasinghe Sirisena is the younger brother of Pallewatte Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena known generally as Maithripala Sirisena who was elected President of Sri Lanka on Jan 8th 2015<\/p>\n

Kumarasinghe Sirisena was earlier the CEO\/General Manager of the State Timber Corporation and a Director at Land Reclamation & Development Company Ltd. and L.R.D.C. Services (Pvt) Ltd.
\nHis services were terminated last December after his brother Maithripala defected from the UPFA govt.<\/p>\n

Kumarasinghe Sirisena was the Coordinating Secretary to the Leader of the House -Sri Lanka Parliament -From March 2005 to August 2005 when his brother held that position. He has also served at various times as Board director of various organizations such as Mahaweli Engineering Services Ltd, State Development & Construction Corporation as well.<\/p>\n

Kumarasinghe Sirisena\u2019s appointment has evoked mixed reactions as his brother Maithripala Sirisena was elected on a platform of anti-corruption, anti-nepotism and good governance.<\/p>\n

Following is a relevant excerpt from the blog \u201cicaruswept.com. It is reproduced here as an indicator of how the appointment is viewed in some circles –

\nThe President\u2019s brother, Kumarasinghe Sirisena, was appointed the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom. <\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the old nepotism creeping in, alright. On one hand, the dude is qualified. He has a Bsc in Public Administration Management, a Bsc in Management (wait, isn\u2019t that the same thing? Is one more corrupt than the other?), and MBA and something called a \u201cMaster of Public Administration.<\/p>\n

Either way: he\u2019s qualified. But in a general sense, and not specifically to run a country\u2019s biggest Internet and fixed-line voice services provider. <\/p>\n

He apparently worked for 19 years in the RDA, and also has time a Director of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation. The RDA has historically been one of the best ways of skimming money off the public account. Until people got ambitious and started building entire airports, the easiest thing was to do a shitty job of building a road and then do it again.
\nHowever, the man has skills. He was the CEO of the State Timber Corporation since 2006, until Mahinda fired him last December for being the Common Candidate\u2019s Brother. He\u2019s also served as Maithripala\u2019s Coordinating Secretary. He apparently also consults for his brother Dudley Sirisena, who, well, controls a sizeable chunk of the rice in this country.
\nMaybe he can actually make SLT better. Maybe not. It\u2019s a better appointment than many under the Rajapakse regime \u2013 he isn\u2019t a young, fetching girl or a politician who failed Education 101, but he definitely is not the most qualified person for that particular job. <\/p>\n

The last I checked, a tar road, however useful, is not a data cable.<\/p>\n
