Newly elected President Maithripala Sirisena will enjoy the support of a Parliamentary majority since over 30 United People\u2019s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Members have pledged him support, sources close to the New Democratic Front (NDF) told The Nation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even after 27 MPs defected to the Maithripala camp before the election, there were 133 MPs in the UPFA fold, raising concerns whether the appointment of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister could win approval in Parliament. This situation also fed rumors that the UPFA would propose one of its members as Prime Minister once Parliament is convened. <\/p>\n

It was also rumored that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would seek a comeback by way of being nominated to the seat held by President Sirisena which, since he became President would fall vacant. <\/p>\n

Sources said Sirisena\u2019s camp had already secured the allegiance of about 30 MPs, enough to give them a majority in Parliament when it convenes on January 19. These numbers are set to increase further during the coming week, the sources added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Apart from about 15 UPFA MPs, all the others have indicated that they would support President Sirisena,\u2019 sources said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile it remains unclear who will become the new Leader of the Opposition considering these new developments. Political analysts point out that it could come to a point where the JVP even with its strength of 3 MPs would be the largest opposition party, which would see party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake become Opposition Leader. <\/p>\n

However, certain sections of the winning coalition have expressed hope that the JVP will also join the new Government.<\/p>\n
