President Mahinda Rajapaksa has declared that those who switched their allegiance to Maithripala Sirisena\u2019s camp will not be taken back to the SLFP-led UPFA.<\/p>\n

The warning was given at a public meeting held at Matale last Friday in the wake of several members of parliament, provincial councils and local government bodies joining the Opposition.<\/p>\n

The President emphasised that defectors wouldn\u2019t be accepted again under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

The UPFA has lost its two thirds majority in Parliament consequent to several SLFP members of parliament as well as two constituents of the coalition, All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) and the SLMC deserting the government. In addition to ten ACMC and SLMC parliamentarians, the government lost well over 100 provincial councillors and members of local government bodies representing the two minority parties, since SLFP MP Wasantha Senanayake (UPFA-Gampaha district) switched his allegiance to the UNP on Nov. 20.<\/p>\n

In addition to ten ACMC and SLMC MPs, the government has lost about ten other members who contested the last parliamentary election in April 2010 on the UPFA ticket. Palani Digambaram, who contested the last general election on the UNP ticket and switched his allegiance to President Rajapaksa also returned to the UNP\u2019s fold.<\/p>\n

The SLMC quit the government soon after President Rajapaksa\u2019s Matale declaration.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, JVP MP Sunil Handunetti said that whoever won the next general election, the Constitution should be amended to prevent crossovers.<\/p>\n

Responding to a query by The Island yesterday, MP Handunetti said that the SLFP had become a victim of its own sordid operations. The SLFP had caused debilitating damage to the political system by engineering mass crossovers, hence should accept responsibility for its own plight.<\/p>\n

The Colombo District MP recalled UNPers, Gamini Jayasuriya and Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena quitting JRJ\u2019s government over signing of Indo-Lanka Accord in 1987.<\/p>\n

MP Handunetti said that he discussed allegations as regards crossovers at a political rally at Ratgama. Claims and counter claims regarding massive payments being made to various politicians couldn\u2019t be swept under the carpet, the MP said, urging the electorate to reject those who had jeopardized political parties they represented for their personal benefit.<\/p>\n

Those who had been boasting that saloon doors of Temple Trees were accessible for anyone were silent today, he added.<\/p>\n
