{"id":35991,"date":"2014-12-10T14:42:40","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T19:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=35991"},"modified":"2014-12-21T17:25:56","modified_gmt":"2014-12-21T22:25:56","slug":"two-up-country-tamil-deputy-ministers-elected-from-nuwaraeliya-district-digambaram-and-radhakrishnan-resign-posts-to-support-maithripala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=35991","title":{"rendered":"Two Up Country Tamil Deputy Ministers Elected from Nuwara Eliya District-Digambaram and Radhakrishnan-Resign Posts to Support Maithripala."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Two newly appointed deputy ministers of President Mahinda Rajapaksa Government yesterday relinquished their ministerial portfolios two days after incumbent handed over nominations to run for presidency for a third time.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deputy Minister of Botanical Gardens and Public Recreation Velusami Radhakrishnan submitted his resignation today, just hours after Deputy Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Udeiappan Palani Digambaram tendered his resignation.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Both deputy ministers have expressed support to the President\u2019s challenger, common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the presidential elections on 08 January.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>President Rajapaksa appointed the Upcountry People\u2019s Front (UPF) Nuwara Eliya Parliamentarian Radhakrishnan as a deputy minister on 9 October.<\/p>\n<p>Radhakrishnan, who contested the 2010 General Election under the UPFA ticket from Nuwara Eliya District, came in second receiving 54,083 preference votes.<\/p>\n<p>Digambaram, another upcountry Tamil parliamentarian and the leader of the upcountry Tamil party, National Union of Workers (NUW), took oaths as a Deputy Minister of President Rajapaksa\u2019s government on 21 August.<\/p>\n<p>His trade union cum party has a strong base in Badulla district among the ethnic Tamil estate worker community and it was highly instrumental for the UPFA to win elections in Badulla district previously.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment of the two deputy ministers was seen as a move aimed at winning the support of the upcountry plantation community ahead of President\u2019s third re-election bid. <\/p>\n<p>However, the government\u2019s lack of incentive to address the problems plantation workers facing and the failure to grant him a responsible portfolio to meet the needs of estate workers were said to be the reasons for Digambaram\u2019s decision to leave the government.<\/p>\n<p>Nuwara Eliya district parliamentarian Navin Dissanayake, the former Minister of State Administration and Reforms, who resigned from his ministerial post last month also said the government\u2019s failure to allocate enough funds for his ministry and to his electorate, in order for him to serve the public he represents was one of the reasons for his decision to quit the government.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy:DailyFT<\/p>\n<div id=\"tweetbutton35991\" class=\"tw_button\" style=\"float:right;margin-left:10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdbsjeyaraj.com%2Fdbsj%2F%3Fp%3D35991&amp;text=Two%20Up%20Country%20Tamil%20Deputy%20Ministers%20Elected%20from%20Nuwara%20Eliya%20District-Digambaram%20and%20Radhakrishnan-Resign...%20&amp;related=&amp;lang=en&amp;count=horizontal\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  style=\"width:55px;height:22px;background:transparent url('https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-tweet-button\/tweetn.png') no-repeat  0 0;text-align:left;text-indent:-9999px;display:block;\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two newly appointed deputy ministers of President Mahinda Rajapaksa Government yesterday relinquished their ministerial portfolios two days after incumbent handed over nominations to run for presidency for a third time.
